hi all, new here

Im currently in the proccess of setting up a 10gal nano for a mantis. I live in the LA area (Eagle rock, near pasadina) and am looking for a mantis (spearer or smasher, smasher preferred as they are generally smaller). If anyone has any unwanted hitchhikers or if anyone can tell me which forum would be better to post in thatd be great.

if you have any offers you can email me at swarm48@hotmail.com or you can just post on this thread. Ill be able to pick it up by early Jan (im getting my car back, yay!) or we could ship it, either way im letting my tank cycle over Christmas break so i wont be taking it too soon.

thanks

heres the plan so far:
5-10gal tank (looking for an 8gal acrylic cube)
aprox 5lbs of LR
aprox 5-10lbs of base rock
3"sand, either LS or playsand
maybe a few corals (mushroom, greenstar polyp)

Im setting the tank up before i leave for home christmas break so it can cycle. Ill place the 5-10lbs base rock as a foundation and place the LR ontop.

Tell me what you think

peacocks are spearers right? is there any way/place i could get a smasher?

im just looking to save some money becuase my lfs tends to price-gouge, esp with special orders, so thats why im looking for someone or some place that has a bit better of a deal (lfs sells "clown mantis", or peacock, for over $35

"Peacock or Clown mantis" is a common name (generally) for Odontodactylus scyllarus a large and very colorful smasher. The "Rainbow mantis" is a common name generally reserved for a large spearer species with a wide range of colors including yellow and orange.

That being said Odontodactylus scyllarus get a little bit large for a 10gallon and pack enough punch to break the thin glass walls. Acryllic is usually suggested for keeping the larger stomatopods and/or at least upgrading to the 20 gallon size.

Also $25-35 is a pretty typical range for Peacock/Clown stomatopods when I've seen them available. Price gouging really kicks in around the $60+ range. ;)

Hope that helps.

Yeh, that does help, thanks

i realize that getting a mantis is a hit or miss situation and you generally take what you can get. But you're right, a peacock is gonna get too big for a 10.

Ive asked my lfs to try and hold onto any TBS mantis they find for me, but its gonna cost me extra for them to hold it as i dont have my tank setup yet (thats what i meant by price gouging, they plan to charge me for keeping the mantis).

ps
like your ongoing story about tim, funny stuff

a TBS mantis is a Neogonodactylus wennerae right? I believe thats the name i got for the easiest mantis to put in a nano (not sure on spelling though).

Ill see what my lfs can do for me, if they cant find anything smaller than a peacock i guess ill be ordering from somewere else or something. Thanks for your help everyone

ps
i guess the request still sorta stands
if anyone in the southern LA area has anything smaller than a peacock that they dont want id be happy to buy it off them. I can pick it up anytime, my roomate just got his car back, and my lfs can hold it for me.

thanks for your responses
