WANTED: Octopus - specifically known as Octopus Cyanea, Day, Reef, or Big Blue octopus

Hello All,

I am looking to acquire at least one specimen (more would be better) of the octopus that is referred to by a few different names. As follows:

Octopus Cyanea, Day octopus, Reef octopus, and Big Blue octopus.

This species of octopus, even though it is extremely common in Hawaii, Bali, Indonesia, etc., I am finding that it is proving difficult to acquire live, healthy specimens.

These animals are non-poisonous and even are very heavily fished for food in Hawaii alone.

Their big attraction for me is that they are a diurnal species of octopus (active during the day). Most octopuses are not.

Plus, due to the fact that they are active during the day, their rapidly changing camouflage is extremely brilliant and beautiful.

I believe that I am a very good Internet researcher, and I also have the ability to speak and trade with wholesalers due to the fact that a family member of mine has a retail pet store. And therefore, a business license specifically pertaining to the pet trade.

I have done quite a bit of searching, researching, emailing, and cold calling. All, so far, to no avail.

Can anyone help? Advice, comments, driving over and plopping one in my tank? Please? (especially the "plopping one in my tank" part).

I would suggest making a list of sites that frequently sell octopi and then checking them daily, or at least weekly, for updates. That's how I hunt for good anemones. Also, repost this on www.tonmo.com. There may be better info there. And last, try to find a breeder. Octopi never ship well and you would be much more successful buying eggs and raising them if you want to keep several at the same time. Good luck on your search.

I think cyanea are "small egged" octopuses; they hatch as big as plankton, so breeding is very unlikely.
