Warning: Two Little Fishes Veggiemag

I just posted something I found that is extremely similar to this situation. And then nitr8 pointed me to this thread.

I'm not saying my tank is 100% perfect, and that this is definitely the source of my SPS loss. But I can tell you that my parameters are all stable, nitrate and phosphate readings in check, and I do regular WC using RODI water.

Very interesting, I've removed the rusted magnets and I'm hoping that some of my pieces that were STN'ing bounce back. I'll definitely keep people updated.

OK so, this could all be a coincidence, but I just lost or almost my best SPS. I thought it was caused by a questionable salt, but I also found a magnet that was rusting in my tank. This sucks. I feel bad for you man. I hope you can recover and hopefully get back on the horse.

I ran into this in 2009 with a different manufacturer (a local guy building frag racks). I had fairly large die off (my frag tank was in my 60 gallon sump with MH Lighting). 3 racks, all had rusty mags. After 4 months of removing, I was back to "normal". Never could say positive, but sure looked that way. I never asked Randy Homes Farley what is in rust, but now I really wonder!!

It is not what is in all rust...we use use "rust" to remove po4...it is what metals are part of the rusting component. In this case these magnets are nickel plated which requires cooper, both metals are harmful in the small systems we keep.

I took mine apart and it still looked brand new. Still will not be going back in the tank though.

I posted the question on the reef chemistry forums for Randy and others input.

Manny if you lost the montis you got from me let me know via text.

Hey BigZ,

I really appreciate the offer, but it looks like I was able to stop the damage/RTN. I removed the magnet, performed a 15% water change and dipped the corals for 10 minutes.

The tissue loss has stopped. I only lost the green Monti, because this one was the one closest to the rusting magnet. No question in my mind that this is what was causing the problem. I'll hit you up soon to buy some more green monti from you.

I hope our experiences can help others.

Mine has been in my aquarium for about 2 years, constantly submerged.... opened it up just sh*ts and grins.....

And now it will probably be finding its way to the garbage.

This makes a great chance for everyone to do a check on their tank to make sure no components are rusting. I replaced a few metal clamp rings.

TLF has let me down

TLF has let me down

I just opened mine up. I have had a couple sps that have been kinda off lately. Who knows if this is why but i bet it didn't help.
