was my 75 build nows its my 110 tall

oh trust me, thats why i am doing this way, my tank had so many dead spots, so i have like 8 power heads (maxi jets lol) in there now(the current tank i am replacing) and i have an overflow box, which works ok for me, but i live in VA and we have a good bit of storms that knock out the power and if i am not here the flooding factor scare me A LOT. So i am hoping that i won't be able to flood the new tank if i tried. My sump will be able to hold another 25ish gallons so that will not overflow lol.

well just finished reading your thread and your set up looks good so far. as a collage student myself i deff feel ya on the hit to the wallet. i thought id give you my input on pipe sizes
class 200 pvc
3/4" = 10 gpm
1"= 16 gpm
1 1/4= 26 gpm
1 1/2" = 35 gpm
2" = 55 gpm

hope this helps !!

so go as big as i can fit then right? Can i still get my vociety when i reduce at the ends right, so if go 1.5 for the CL to the 3/4 lock line i will get more flow then 1inch pvc to the lock line and still get the same vociety or will i? Vociety and flow gph confuses me a bit, some times i guess when i feel like the water is really pushing out it is just high vociety then and maybe low flow. what is a good balance. does that make sense to anyone?

thanks everyone
matt

Ya I have a lot of powerheads. Two seio m1100' up top. 2 tunze 6045s on the back bottom oopposite sides point on. and on the left and right side i have two koralia 3'. I know there is some deadspots, but thats ok beacuse I can siphon that area when all the detritus builds up there.

Cloosed loop is gonna look clean.
My sump is a 30g with only about 15g in it. When the power goes out , it only drains about 10g maybe. Thats my system though, I dont know how much a 75g would drain when the power goes out

yeah i love my yellow tang i have now....is the intake for the dart up close to the surface? is that why it is sucking in air. that happens on my return pump when the water gets low in the old sump. i saw some of the ball valves with blue handles and they seem easier and the new red ones seem much better. those black ones are nice but very expensive i hear-but the way to go if you can afford it. I think i am going with 1inch pvc for my return and 2inch for the intake on the dart then 1inch also for the closed loop. hope it will work

Sounds like a good plan Paulie. I never saw the price on the black handled valves, I just know I wouldnt go with red again.

It's actually my output that is creating the Vortex. I have one closed loop return going left with the other going down to the right. When the water meets, it causes a Vortex which sucks air down from the return going right. It's even a good 3" below the water line. Looks cool, but once it gets too deep the air gets hit by the flow and blows the bubbles around.

oh i was'nt knocking yours when i said dead spots, i was knocking my own, just wanted to make sure you know that. it should not drain that much water, only a inch or 2 of water so i think thats like 4 or 5 gallons.

O i know Paulie... dont worry i wasnt thinkin that. I was just saying what happens in my tank. No matter how many poweheads you have (or closed loops outlets) there will always be deadspots. I just use my deads spots as an area for detritus to build up so i can siphon it out

thats smart, but i am trying to avoid them as much as i can lol. I like those double end lock line things to move the water around, hope that works ok. once i get the plumbing this week, i am going to test the CL out. so that should be fun. going to post a video of it if i can figure out how to.

ok that sounds easy enough, look for it mid week, going to use a little Navy boat to show the water movement lol. hope its like a hurricane.

I see on your thread you have an Octopus NW 200. Can you give me any info on it. I have a 58gal with oceanic sump.
Thank you!

happy to...what info are you looking for??? price point is between 200 to about 260, paid 257 with tax at my LFS, because shipping was about 20 and i like to support them even though i am strait broke lol. the pump is a octopus 3000, it pushes 790 gph, needle wheel model..the skimmer has a funnel cone design, but an insert which makes it easier to clean, and also makes it easy to adjust the wet to dry skim...it keeps the clean water out almost, leaving just the strait NASTY stuff. the collect cup is by far my favorite part, it just sits on top, not unscrewing anything, just lift it and all it needs is like a 1/4 inch to remove. it hold A LOT of cups. what else can i say, i am VERY happy with it, i have read places that say it is made from cell cast acrylic so its ozone safe, but then some others say it is not. So that i am unclear about. there are tons more i could say about it...think of anything in particular let me know. oh it is easy to put together lol, and did i say i liked it. i will post another picture of it tomorrow running, i can saw though that the pump is pretty sweet, i have a 20 long tank and i put the pump in there with the skimmer and it filled the 20 with bubbles, white as snow in seconds, and i began to see brown stuff and a bug that was in the tank float to the top. it does its job for me. anyways as you can see i love to type a lot so let me know what else.

thanks for your reply

Thanks for the info! What size sump do you have? I'm thinking of going a little bigger on my sump and building my own. So my concern is space. I'd also like to add a TLF reactor for carbon.

Thanks! Jeremy

my sump is 38x17x17, holds 48 gallons to the top, and about 30 gallons running, maybe a bit more when the skimmer is full and the 2 reactors are also. yeah TLF are the way to go, i had a Kent one and did not like it at all.
