Several patches of my zoas do this umbrella kind of thing where the skirt pulls down and makes the zoa look pointy. Its like its ****ed and being disturbed but I can't find anything thats doing it, even at night with a light. Some of the heads just melted away but others recovered. Is it normal?

My sunny D's are currently doing this, and I'm not quite sure why... They were all good about a week ago, and all of a sudden, they seem upset... Following along for the same advice/input...

Yeah its normal....mine will do it from time to time....now is it a sign of something bad i dont think so, maybe someone else can help you with that...but IMO no its not bad

My alk is high 9's personally... Not sure about the OP...

Not trying to jack, I'm jus in the same boat...

Mine do it all the time but come back like nothing! Maybe they're stretching!!!!!

Tinpanva with my experience with zoas. Having low alk has caused the same thing with me. Alk is harder for me to keep in check being I manual dose. I try to dose daily to keep from having major swings in alk. Since doing this my zoas have been coming back and growing faster.

The " BELL " syndrome from my experience is due to something being off in your water chemistry be it ALK ( IMPORTANT ) ( pH ) calcium or some other part like Mag or Iodine etc... My tank does have have swings which the minute I see my Z's and P's start BELLING i check my pH or alk and off course its low....

But there are times that they BELL on me and its more due to being irritated by Pods, Fish or Inverts... or it could be recieving too much flow or sand being kicked on it too much by the reef inhabitants.. From my experience

Lots of good ideas, I'm dosing every 3 days but I agree, I think a daily dose will curb my Alk swings. Glad I'm not the only one to have this issue! I fret over that tank like a mother hen.

I don't run Calcium reactors or other machines. Just have a simple HOB Deltec on my little cube and do top offs with dose.
