Just saw an amazing event!

I had just finished doing a feeding, when the MH's turned off and my actinics kicked in. Observing, I sat in the room, now dark except for the bluish haze emanating from my 28 gallon SW universe. In the quiet of the moment, after some minutes, I noticed my Yellow-Tail Blue Damsel remaining in a stationary position around my Hammer Coral. I began to wonder what he was up to, when suddenly a half dozen eggs about the size of a rounded flea floated up out of the Hammer Coral. These were quickly devoured (never mind that he just got fed!). This continued every 15-30 seconds or so, eventually tapering off and becoming more sporadic. It was a very cool thing to see, and I didn't think that I would actually ever be present when or if such an event were to occur in my tank.

Some data:

The tank is on a neptune Aqua controller programmed to go through a 24 hour light cycle and moon phase as it would be in tropical (equitorial) regions. I use moonlights, actinics and MH's to simulate this as best as possible. Just yesterday I replaced my 9 month old 14K 150 HQI MH bulb with a 20K by Radium (probably just coincidental?). The temp is a constant 79 degrees (depending upon which thermometer you read).

I feel your awe... We witnessed a similar rarity when our zebra-darts "mated". Makes you feel 'special', no?

It really does. To see something that doesn't happen every day, in an environment that still has many mysteries is special.

i picked up 3 yellow wrasses yesterday. was pretty intrigued when they all went to bed (buried themselves under the sand) before lights out - two nights in a row now :)

Yay, coral porn!

Seriously, this is a phenomenal occurance and a testament to your reefing skills. Great work!
