Water Change Schedule

I saw on another forum, that somone with a SPS dominated tank does a water change once every 6 months on it and according to them, its doing great???

I do 10 gallons every week on my 75 gallon SPS system, what does everyone else do?

Once a week 15 to 20 percent but I have a large fish load in a 100 gal and all alk ect dialed in to a tee.

Does he include pics of how "great" his tank is doing? Not that its impossible, I just see micronutrients getting out of wack and hard to dose if you dont know what levels they should be at in the first place and also cannot reliably test for. thats why WC's are nice they help reset those levels.

I do what changes whenever I get around to them, probably every month or two now. If I had more time I guess I would do them every month, on a set schedule, around 20%.

^ How large is your tank?

I think I need to start doing more water changes. Probably most of the GHA/dino problem.

I make once a week 10 to 15 percent to my 75 gal reef :),
but I do so often because I have many fish and many sps,
In my old aquarium (30gal)I had to make a change until 3-4 months without affecting corals (full of sps), I think because i have very few fish (2-3) and not fed a lot. However, the ideal i think and the best for our corals are frequent changes, this what I see from my coral health:)

5 gallons every two weeks on my 30g/10g sump. I was doing weekly for well over a year but at this point there are no benefits I have seen subjectively or measurably that justified continuing the weekly changes.

20 gallons every 2 weeks in my 90g with 30g sump. Was doing 15 every week for a while but switched to every 2 weeks and haven't noticed any ill effects.

From what I gathered from bring in the hobby a short amount of time, water changes should be based on two factors, fish load and how heavy or light you use your skimmer. If you don't have alot of stuff that will be going into your tank that can turn into nitrates, the less water changes you need to do.

I dose vodka and mb7 (based on the experience of SunnyX, who previously posted) so I basically only use WC's to replenish trace elements that I cannot dose myself. I do 5G every couple weeks.

I remember one of TOTM owners had not done a water change in years at the time his tank was selected for TOTM (i can't remember who it was)..

I do a 20 G water change on my 125 G mixed reef every 4-6 weeks.. I used to do more when I first started in this hobby 5 years ago (i guess i'm getting a bit lazy with this aspect of the hobby)
