Water change

How often and by how much should water be changed.

I will be starting a 46 G tank.. soon.. Just wanted to get some of the questions out of the way .. some hav said 25% a week some say 50% a week. What is recomended

I recommend 10-15% a week. If you don't have much LR or LS then 25-30% is more appropriate.

Just like waterkeeper said, people like to target about 10% weekly, or 25% every 2 weeks. Good luck.

I change 10% per week.

It depends on your tank - Feeding your tank allot and having a higher bioload means change more more often. Having a protein skimmer, extra live rock, a deep sand bed, and or a refugium means you can change it less often.

In my main tank I feed fairly heavy, have a refugium, average rock, average skimmer and I need to do a 10% change every week or I'll start getting a bit of red algae. If you don't feed allot (like just pinches of dry for the fish) you can go longer without a change.... I used to do 10% every two months no problem when I under-fed.

i like keeping a super clean tank. 25% a week when I'm not being to lazy and skim the ba'jesus out of it. i ran a refugium for a long time but when i would trim it i would get the stray strans of cheato in my pumps and clog them. i finally emptied the fuge and the water is still really clean.

I do 10% water changes on my 40g mixed reef religiously. Works for most.
