Water Changes every 1 week?? Every 2 weeks??

Methinks I be agreeing with ye. (Yeah, I know Talk Like a Pirate Day was on the 19th, but I didn't get to do it too much 'cause of work...)

I checked your tank build. Incredible!!!
You must be retired, a widower, with deceased parents, no children, and independently wealthy. ;)
Now that's funny!!!
I work...sort of.
I have a loving, reef tank loving, loving wife.
Correct on the parents. They would be ancient if they were still alive.
Lots of children and one grandchild.
Financially blessed, but no where wealthy. My wife and I each have an allowance. She regularly gives me some of hers for the tank.

Randy thanks for the link... I suck at water changes and I just think your system might be a good way to go.

I have to say you are always a great and wonderful source of information!!!!

If the water changes are too tedious, maybe set up an automatic system. I change 1% daily with o effort at all (well, it takes a few minutes once in a while to make a big batch of new salt water for the 88 gallon reservoir I use). :)

I discuss water changes here:

Water Changes in Reef Aquaria

There's another 'Randy' in the MMA world who's a living legend, but you definitely rule here. Thanks for your information!

Thanks for your information!

You're welcome.

happy reefing. :)

And I hate it when Randy does something that I think is good.

Scary feeling, huh?

anything wrong with doing 2% daily? that's what I had been doing.. maybe i should just cut back to 1%? i had been changing out about 3 gallons daily

I like the idea of the small daily change but unless it is automated with a time for me it takes less time if i just do a little large 1 day a week. I vary on my 35g between 15% every week or every other week haven't figured out what is best. If i am going out of town i always make sure i change 5g before and after just not knowing how much food was put in the tank while i was gone. So i change between 30%-60% a month.

I think that's dandy

For future reference, real men don't say "dandy"

You guys made me feel bad so I changed some water. I still had some real water around which I mixed with fake water.
Now I need to get some fake fish because my fish are looking at me and wondering if I am going on vacation being that I changed water before it's time

I hope you don't mind me injecting a quick question into the thread. Randy mentions he uses a "Reef Filler" pump for his water changes. Sounds like a great idea but diaphram pumps are normally pretty loud. Anyone have experience with the noise levels on these pumps?

Thanks

The fish love the fresh seawater every week, I figure it's a nice break from swimming in their own waste. The fishie appetites are especially ravenous after a water change.

Oh, do you not have a skimmer & mechanical filtration then ? I was under the impression that those pieces of equipment kept the waste/organics removed from the water....

Definitely not living room quality. Mine is in the basement. It easily pumps across the basement or upstairs. :)

I try to keep the water as pristine as possible:

I filter heavily with a quality skimmer.

I use GFO in a fluidized reactor to remove phosphates and silicates.

I use quality activated carbon in another reactor that's changed frequently.

I have an appropriate sized and well-lit refugium with caulerpa and chaeto growing.

I have really good flow that suspends most of the food until its eaten.

No matter how hard you try, you still can't get everything out of the water. It's just not possible. That still leaves uneaten food and fish poo in the rocks, so I blow it out with a small powerhead and siphon what I can off the display tank sand and then the bottom of the sump. I then replace that water with fresh seawater every week.

I'm experimenting with getting rid of algae by not doing a water change currently. It's been a good three months since I've done one and many people say my tank looks like a zoevit (sp? not into that) run tank. I can't say I've noticed many changes, the algae is slowly going away (fed by RO or salt mix, also switched to distilled water). The only thing I've noticed are my nitrates went from 0 to maybe 0.5 max. My corals seem happier, haven't darkened (SPS tank), and overall everything seems happy. BTW the algae is Chrysophytes.....HUGE pain that won't go away and water changes did nothing but make it worse.

Chrysophyta, aka, diatoms, or brown algae, need silicate to grow. If you are using a DI, it needs to be changed, or you are getting silicate from your salt.

I have a color change DI column, but I dont need to check it. The brown algae start growing on the glass, and that's my indicator that the DI resin has exhausted. I change it out, clean off the glass, and they dont come back for another 6mo or so.
