Hi, who does water changes on there tanks. It can be fish only, sps or anything. Well I try to do once a week water change totaling to 25% a month. On one of the South African forums people say they dont do and all still good and healthy. Di the best of the best systems in the world do water changes or get away with it?

I like to take baths in the same water i used last week, and the week before, and the week before, and the week before....

I think i just threw up a little

Uhhhh...I hate to bust yer bubble, but I think water changes are required for Reef Setups! You may get away with just topping off for awhile, but this can and will eventually become detrimental to the health of your livestock!

I'll chime in here although i'm almost afraid to admit it, but I slack on the water changes BIG TIME. I think its been almost 3 months since my last one and everything seems to be doing just fine. That being said, I try to do them monthly and on my 125 I usually change about 25G or so. Doing water changes cannot hurt one bit and really they should be done. Dilution is the answer to pollution.

I get irritated a guy telling me his tank running 8 years and never done a waterchange. His arguement that if you have a good filteration system why do water changes. In all my years of reefkeeping I try at least once a week water change. Does water changes help in reducing nitrates or is that done by filteration? Sea water has some 70 trace elements and some must get used up right, so water changes are ver important.

I have a 50 gallon total system and I do a 5 gallon water change with a good reef salt every week. Water changes do a few things for all tank types. 1 it removes organic waste from the water " The solution to pollution is dilution" Anthony Calfo. 2 it replenishes all the trace elements that the corals use up and in the proper amounts. 3 gives you a chance to remove waste from the sand bed and remove unwanted algae. I have a fuge, strong skimmer and kalk top off to keep the water quality and stability in check but still do my weekly water change.

I've done both. . . That being said weekly water changes make a big difference positively.

I asked Mr Wilson who helps out with the "Coral Reef in Canada 1650 gallon" about water changes. Check it out in my view he says good to do on smaller tanks but much bigger tanks can get away with it. I dont know of guys with over 500 gallon tanks, do you guys ever do water changes?
