water flow suggestions???

so i got a 120RR with dual overflows in the back and need to do something different with my flow. Old tank had a wave2k but that doesnt work really well with this tank. My return is a mag18. So my question is does anyone have suggestions on what i should do or buy, or does anyone have anything available to sell. Ive been looking at a few things so i know theres alot of options just thought id ask local reefers before i go out and buy something. Also im trying to keep it not too expensive and ive been told maximods are the way to go . If i were to do something like the maxi jets whats the best way to have them on a wavemaker, or are there other pumps with wavemakers that are better.
Any suggestions/opinions are helpful

thanks

I think I am convinced to go with Koralias instead of the MaxiMods. The Koralias are $40-$50 depending on model. They come with a magnet swivel holder as well. Add up the cost of a Maxi-mod and the Koralia is a better deal and is better quality IMO. I do have a maxi-mod by the way.

Maxi 1200 $18
Maxi-Mod $15-25
Magnet Swivel Mount $25

Total $58-68

I have them on a 20 minute cycle with an Aquacontroller. Seems to work fine, a little startup noise but not bad.

i have been really looking at these, how many/what model would you recommend for a 120. and do you think i could run them on somthin like the wavemaster pro.

I have two Koralia 3's on a 90 and really like them so far. Only had them a month or so. I think others on here would be better for recommending how many but I would think 3 - Koralia 4's. again, others would have to comments on the wavemaster, but I would assume you could but I don't have any experience with a wavemaster.

I have read you are not supposed to put them on a wavemaker. It is hard on them.

I have 2-koralia 3's in my 75. I use my wave maker to control 3 mj1200 in the tank. This gives me plenty of flow and random motion.

The Tunze 6025's is another option, they're around $60 each. They come with magnets and you can literally point the flow in just about any direction you want. You can do a 5-minute mod to the inside of the housing cover to increase the flow. Saying they put out 1000 GPH is being pretty modest.

Hey, will those 6025's work with the variable speed controllers like the new AquaController thing from Neptune systems?

If so, I think I might order 4 of them for use in my 125.

I guess I'd have to ask you what type of coral are you going to grow in it? If you are just doing softies and LPS, you don't need a lot of flow.

No, the only Tunze nanostream that is controllable by the AquaSurf is the 6055's. I am using 3) modded 6025's and 1) 6055 for wave on my 120. Here's a video of the single 6055 in action.

From his signature, he's keeping SPS and LPS. :)

Wow, that is a pretty awesome wave for a powerhead. Is that on a controller? Are the 6025's going there?

How do you think 3 6055's would work in a 125 with an aquasurf?

-JB

Yeah, it's on a Profilux II controller. It does the same thing as the AquaSurf. In the video, that's just the 6055 going. With the 3) 6025's on, you don't get that kind of wave. I'm glad I don't because it would make me sick looking at my tank!

The 6025's would have to be on a timer to cycle on/off every 30 minutes or something to that effect.

3) 6055's would really rock your tank but I think you could get away with 2 even if you are looking for a big wave. Then maybe add a 6025 for constant flow.

Here's how I have the flow set up in my tank. All four nanostreams are mounted on the back glass.

hmm i like the nanostreams, so do you think i should do 3 or 4 of the 6025s, the 6055 is a bit pricy. Im thinking 4 of the 6025s but what kind of timer would you recommend on them.

If I had to choose, I would say 4 if you keep a lot of SPS. I originally started out with 6 of them but sold 3 because I couldn't keep the sandbed in place. If I didn't have a sandbed, I would love to have all 6 plus the 6055. :)

If you're not using an aquarium controller, any appliance timers would be okay for this purpose. Maybe you can get two timers and plug in 2 pumps to each one? Then cycle them at different intervals to get random flow. Just a thought...

Do the pumps face each other or in different directions? For the flow pattern do u have 2 pumps on one-side running at the same time then alternate the otherside? Nice wave action

No, the pumps are always on. I don't create any random flow in my tank. Some people like to have it but I just choose not to.

The pumps are pointed at varying angles. At some point, they do intersect though.
