Water level issue with reef octopus xp3000 ext.

I'm having a problem keeping the water level up. I'll set it an inch under the neck and in a couple of hours it will drop to about half way down. When I get home I will take apart the gate valve and check it. Other than that what else should I be looking for? It's a used skimmer form a guy in the local club and was working fine for him.
