Water Parameters ?

I am using reef crystals my tank volume is roughly 50 gallons.

I am using API test kits

Nitrate 5ppm
PH 8.15 (Neptune probe)
Calcium 360
ALk 9dkh

I just did a 8 gallon water change and I am wondering why my calcium level is low. Test kit faulty but even if it was faulty can it be way off?

Tom, your Mag is not listed. I learned the hard way getting water chem down pat and this is my experience. Get the big three (Alk, Ca and Mg) tests by Salifert. I found them more accurate and reliable than API. Test Mg first and get your LFS to second test it for you to confirm. Once it is 1250-1350, then adjust your Ca slowly. Ca should be 390-450. Don't chase PH, in fact don't even really worry about it. Reef Crystals should have plenty of Mg and the KH will run a bit high. Also use a calibrated refractometer to be sure your SG is correct. If I recall Reef crystals should run higher than your numbers if the SG truly is 1.025-1.026. Good Luck.

I never checked Mag to be honest. I need to get this test kit. My refractometer is showing 1.026

Ok I will get Salifert

Mag is very important when trying to raise and maintain calcium levels. Good advice given above.

Yes good advice. Through the magic of chemistry the magnesium will help to keep the calcium stable allowing you to maintain a level that you want. Good luck.
