Water Pump Max Head

How do you determine max head. Is that just how high it has to go or does that include how far your plumbing runs horizontal too. I'm trying to find out for my frag tank the plumbing goes across 6 feet and up 4 so does that mean I need a pump with at least 10 feet.

Head is calculated using vertical distance that water needs to be pushed up, not horizontal. Add to that the head loss due to friction from plumbing, elbows, etc. So, the horizontal run will add some head loss, but not much. It can mostly be ignored, unless you've got a crazy number of twists and turns.
