Water Pumps

About to buy a Reef ready tank between 75 and 90 gal.
was wondering what type of water pump is the best? (quietest, most reliable, longest lasting?) ive heard some people mention TUNZE, called IWAKI.

I have a panworld 100 return on my 75G and a little giant 3md on the skimmer
The panworld is super quiet and runs cool
the little giant is quiet but is hot to the touch.

Love the panworld pump - will replace the LG first chance I get

Panworld is designed by the same guy that designed the iwaki

If you are talking about the return, I would not recommend Tunze recirc pumps. They have a problem with excessive noise. I had to quit using mine it was so loud. Tunze USA acknowledges the problem. Tunze Streams are very popular for generating flow inside the tank. Iwaki's are not related to Tunze. They are external pumps that make good returns if that is what you are plumbing for. It depends on your sump. If you don't have a bulkhead or don't want to drill one in your sump, you could get by with one or two submersibles (Like Mags or Eheims).

It really depends on what application you are talking about.

I use a Mag7 for sump return (a bit noisy)
Little Giant 4X for Closed loop (to noisy)
Iwaki 40RLT for skimmer
Tunze 6100 with surge timer in tank

Total flow in tank is 3600Gph (75G SPS tank)

I like the idea of more than 1 circulation pump in case a pump fails and goes unnoticed for a day. I could drive the entire tank with 1 pump and it would certainly be quieter, cheaper and easier but the redundancy is important in my eyes.

no i plan on drilling or getting it drilled for my sump/fuge. and yes its for the return. in another thread someone was starting a 125 gallon tank, and everyone told him to get an Eheim pump. are they better? im willing to pay more now so i know i have a pump that works but i don't want anyone else to know.

Eheim
quiet
reliable
great flow

In the submersible pump category, they are in a different class than Mag, quiet one, rio, etc pumps
