Just pickd up a good size piece of what I think are watermelon zoanthids. It is fist size with at least a couple hundred polyps.
I think I got a good deal for fifty bucks. does anyone have any pics to compare with mine?
Any tips for caring for them?
Any advice would be apreciated, and i will post pics when they open.

Hey, turns out it is a rainbow rock I hav at least three varieties.
here are some shots 45 minutes after placing in tank. They are not all open but you can get an idea.
I am pretty happy so far.
Can anyone ID the other types.

Thats a nice rock for 50.00. You could probably frag that out & make back your money plus have 3 varities of zoas.

Yeah or you could keep the rock whole and have a rock of zoos instead of a bunch of measly frags :D

Just put some little frag rock next to the big one and let them go on to the frag rock's and then you have frag's that's what i do to frag

Even though all those zoos are on a branching coral skeleton and i could probably frag it pretty easy . I would not dream of it ! It is a beautiful piece the way it is. Its completely open today and found a couple more varieties and possibly some paly's on it.

Are these as hardy as my other zoos?( i'll post a pic) I hope so!

These are my first zoos the second coral I ever got .

kingfisher62,
What kind of lighting do you have?
One of my zoid looked like yours initially... However, mine changed the colors and it doesn't look like yours anymore...
I am running 4 VHO (50/50) on my 90 gal reef.
Any help would be appreciated...
thanks

Jeteye, I am running the standard lighting that came with my 14g biocube 48w PC, one bulb is actinic and the other daylight.
How long did you have yours and when did they start loosing color ? What color loss did you see first?
I have only had mine about ten days so i don't know if I can help you.

from the 3rd picture you have, you see the orange ring, then another ring (grey/brownish) inside.. that whole thing turned brown.. :(

Very nice buy. It seems like watermelons and radioactive dragon eyes like to colonize together. Here is a picture of mine. I got this rock for $10 last week. I plan to go again this week to pick up some more.

The picture definitely doesn't do them justice since my camera is old.

online retail or LFS?

I got mine from a LFS in San Jose, CA. They have wonderful deals. Their false percs only cost $9 and I got a cleaner shrimp for $10. Nothing has died yet from them.

lucky! My LFS everything cost and arm and a leg. I feel like i need to take out a 2nd mortgage just to buy a false percs. :/

I got mine from my LFS.
Yeah , things can be costly .
I find myself bouncing around from LFS to LFS and every once ands a wile I find some pretty good deals or a really nice specimen or both!
