wave action for corals

Hi All,
is wave action a must for coral health? I have several maxijet PH and I am not sure if I sure invest in a wave controller.

The only added benefit of a wave controller is for flow variability. If you have good turbulent flow, its not necessary.

A "must"?... absolutely not..
Have some noticed/claimed more "equal" growth patterns on SPS,etc when using one.... yes

Should a maxijet be run on a wave controller.. NO..
Its designed for continuous operation and should NOT be stopped/started frequently..

Invest in a proper controllable powerhead like a vortech/jebao,etc... if you want one..

But people have been successfully keeping reef tanks for much longer than "wave makers" have been around..

You can also manufacture turbulence by having two wavemakers aimed at each other: I did that with 2 Sea Swirls with great success on my last tank.

no I used normal ones when i started BUT I will say they make life much easier as you can dial in the flow to a desired pattern making for much easier placement of corals.

In my yard is a tree. It grows leaning to the side. This is because strong wind current goes through in that direction pushing the tree.

You can see this with some corals. That is why a variety of currents can help some corals grow in a regular way. Look at your corals and see if it is getting constantly pushed in one direction. If so consider changing the direction, intensity or use a wave maker that can vary.

Bounce them of the front glass. You will get varied current, and broad sweeping current back across your rock structure.
