Wavemaker

I don't know how you guys are still thinking the vortech mp40w is over $400.

you can buy a brand new MP40w for less than $400 at many places. Probably your own LFS as well.

Those who haven't used a vortech really shouldn't speak. It's not a powerhead, it's a tank water mover. Koralias are either streams or odd directional, that's it. Vortechs create undertow, random flow, and they flow a LOT.

under 400 ? !

are u serious ? you have any links ? lol Id love to get another one, and +
1 on your comment. you really can not imagine how great they are without seeing it

I bought one brand new for a price I can't mention from my LFS. It wasn't a 'customer only special price' deal either.

marine depot and big name places like that are always gonna bend you over on those things.

If anything, buy a vortech used from here!

Can you post a link showing a lower price for a new on?

Speaking to the above quoted coment by Chimmike, it really does move the water differently. My anemone leans toward the mp20 and it's at least 18 inches away. I thought it was my closed loop doing it, but it only does it whe the Vortech is on. It obviously creates a " vortech"

I have no doubt that it is a wonderful product and does everything you guys claim it does but when you have a family to support and your budget is limited I wouldn't buy one if it produced orgasms. (well maybe then I would)

I have a family to support as well. That doesn't mean I can easily afford the things. I definitely have to save up for everything I'm getting for my tank build. But I'm getting good quality stuff from the get go this time instead of buying inexpensive crap then realizing how much better the expensive stuff is and blowing a bunch of money on inexpensive stuff only to sell it for pennies and get the good stuff.

Either your wife is much more into the hobby than mine or you lie to her,and/or make a great deal more money than we do.

I just switched out my maxi jets this weekend. I currently use 4 Hydor Koralia Evolution Circulation 1050 connected to a JBJ Ocean pulse Quadra. It's a 120 gallon tank with lots of rock. I've noticed more flow since I switched them out and so far the new models seem to handle the timer pretty well. I would love a MP40 but at this point I couldn't justify it.

How does it create undertow? All it does it move water. The wave is what's making the undertow... correct? I'm pretty sure there a lot of Tunze products out there that I can put at full GPH and still get an undertow for 1/2 the price of the Vortech.

probably none of the above. just because I'm buying one doesn't mean I'm doing it immediately, or even this month........or within the next 2-3 months,

tunzes for 1/2 the price of vortech? with controller and everything new? And the same amount of flow/variable flow?

where?

the answer is NO!

how does it exactly work ? msg vortech :) he is not the designer !

We are all users, not selling these, so no point arguing :)

I have tried all, tunze wave box, tunze PH, Korallias, MJs, and many more and nothing compares to MP40 ! as I posted above, you are comparing power heads with water moving machine !! they are not the same !

vortec pulls in almost no water with respect to how much it moves. it moves a wall of water not push water in one direction.

PS. Points and laughs at all u married ppl hahaha lol

I dont have to ask anyone, and if I want to save money, I just dont talk to my GF for a week
lol

hahaha

Do like me and build your own knock off circuit and motor with mag cupling, and just buy the mp-40 wet end to drive it. I play with circuits all day, and its a challenge to me to make this work. And a big money savings. lol

I had 4 koralia 4 on a red sea wavemaker in my 180 reef tank and water movement was good but strong in some areas opposed to others, Yesterday I just connected my 2 mp40w's and the flow is uncomparable. Would never switch back. Brand new on Ebay for 379.00 no shipping.

Plus for some of the Vortech modes, don't you actually need two pumps? For that Nutrient Transport mode you need a master and a slave correct?

not necessarily.

That's not to say that I won't be running two mp40's on my 100g cube, cuz I will, lol.

I know the wave mode is more effective with two mp40's. But I won't be doing that on my rimless.

I wonder how many of the folks advocating the big flows and expensive pumps have ever noticed that on the reefs where most of our corals come from the flow is around 1 foot per second, or less. And while there are eddy currents and other irregular flows, there is very little "surge" flows below 10-20 feet deep, and currents don't change direction more than once every 4-12 hours.

But reefs do not have a finite volume of water like our home systems do.
The high flow is to remove waste and get it into the filtration system.
