Way OT: Good antivirus program?

I just got a new computer, well my parents got a new mac and I got the PC we used to have that got a few more parts to make it faster. Before I used Norton on the computer and was pleased, but was wondering if anyone knew of any better anti-virus programs? Thanks

I use Norton on all my computers...always have and I'm very pleased with it. Easy to use, easy to get updates, very easy to program auto scans. I had my own graphic design studio for several years and would get hundreds of article, pics etc. each week to include in newspaper and magazine articles and Norton picked up lots of viruses and never let anthing through. Do make sure to get the updates regularly. I have mine programmed for everyday but at least once a week the updates should be downloaded. HTH, Marcye

I prefer CA Etrust myself.. I just don't like all the hooks that most of the AV programs come with. To me an AV program should do just what I want it to do, nothing more, nothing else..

I'll check out CA Etrust and see what it's like. Also, while we're off topic, does anyone know of a good program that can monitor the temp of the CPU? I'm looking for one that will display a little transparent window in a corner or have something in the task bar that will let me know me temp.

I found a program that tells you the temp, but you have to go into the program to find out and I just want to be able to take a quick look to see what it's running at since I want to overclock the processor.

I agree with MotherboardMonitor - great prog, can monitor temps, core voltages, bus/clock speeds, much more.
I still have a PIII 733 that is running at 933 (if I remember correctly, it's the kid's computer nowadays) modified core voltage, etc. Was a fun project... I used to run it at just over 1000 but have since gone to quieter fans and can't take the heat, had to drop it a little for stability...

For AV, I like a prog called AVGfree.

I like the windows Live one care (pretty new), I was always been a norton customer but the last few years it seems that their program uses up a lot of resources and slow start up. I've been pretty happy with the new Live OneCare and you can install up to 3 computers. You can get it for free for 3 months at their website.

Motherboard Monitor is a great little program but your motherboard has to have the probe built into it. Why are you worrying about the heat? Did you over clock it?

For the anti virus check out Grisoft AVG also. Works great and doesn't pull a lot of resources.

Yes I did overclock it, got a program right after that and it said my temp was above 52* C so i turned the comp back off and let it cool down, then put the settings back to normal

right now the CPU is running at 50* according to motherboard monitor... i really need to get some more fans in this case badly! There is only one fan for the powersupply and only a heatsink on the processor. I have another case with an AMD processor I'm going to take apart tonight to see if the heatsink and fan on that one will work on my AMD processor.

What is a good temp to be running at? Isn't the temp supposed to be around 44* C?

depends on the processer. Check the amd website for normal temp specs.
