wear gloves

I have never once worn gloves when doing tank work. After yesterday that is going to change. I was taking apart a 55g tank, took all the live rock out and put it in a bin. Also fragged some sinulara. Well, I just spent the last 15hrs either in bed or getting sick. My wife was so worried she almost called 911. She checked my temp and I had a fever of 102. I dont know what got me but something did. I feel a bit better now, just exhausted .

WEAR GLOVES!!!

especially when fragging. corals spit out all kinds of nasty stuff when your chopping em up its made me sick before also.

I dont know what got to me, but it became hard to breathe, dizziness, 102 fever, just super sick. Lasted for about 8 hrs before it started to back off a bit. It was up there with the sickest I've ever been.

Id blame the sinulara but you will probably never no. It could have been food poisoning for all you no.

All I had was oatmeal, when I started feeling sick I ate a bagel. Thats all. I removed about 85lbs of rock, most of which is going to be cooked. There were some hydroids on the rock, couldve been that. Or the sinulara, or any of the other things I dont have the knowledge to identify.

Jim you guys ever wear gloves, or just take your chances? I hate the idea of gloves, but yesterday sucked and my wife isnt too happy about how sick I got.

I have been getting a lot of Bristle worm bristles stuck in my hands, like they are free floating in my tank or something.
I use the aqua gloves, I dont like the lack of feeling but do like the no pain thing.

In your case your just being a sissy though, or probably just wanted off work so you could play with the tank :).........

(just joking not trying to offend :) )

I never wear gloves but i should. I never really had a bad expience except getting tagged by bristle worms all the time at work. Some people are sensitive to that stuff, other poeple aren't effected.

unless its an emergency i wear gloves. all planned entries into the tank have gloves on. if i need to get in NOW i wont wear them but even most emergencies will give me time for gloves.

Definitely agree! I completely stripped down my 20 gallon for a cleaning last weekend and took care to handle the torch and elegance corals very carefully without contacting their tentacles. I was more casual with the other corals but I ended up with a horrible welting rash on my hands that I am still dealing with right now. From now on, I will always wear gloves for a major cleaning. By the way, I wonder if it was the sinularia that stung me. I noticed that they burn my other corals (even my elegance) when they get close to them.

I never were gloves in my tank. Just started wearing them regularly when I go diving. I've had a few lobster spine scratches diving but never any irritation doing either.

I don't really buy the "in the water" theory, I'm surounded by the water diving. Somebody will argue about the volumn of the ocean, but dragging bugs out of their hiding places you don't really pay too much attention to what you're touching...

One thing is I don't have any allergies, maybe people who do are more prone to reactions...

i wasn't wearing gloves up till couple weeks ago when i moved a rock and got pricked pretty good in my finger. I never had a problem in my tank before but just got the rock that had some frogspawn on it in a trade and noticed few days later after i got pricked that it had bunch of bristle stars in it. didn't swell or anything but just felt itchy for a whle.

Bristle worms. They shed those bristles and grow new ones but the old ones are still potent. If they lay an egg mass in the substrate, they seem to protect it with a generous mulch of old bristles.

Gloves are a good idea. I keep meaning to get some for work when I follow ________. I never know when or where I'm going to touch a glob of that graphite grease she leaves in her tracks. It takes nearly a week to wear off and by then, I'm following her again. Forgetting gloves in that case is just an inconvenience, but dealing with animals whose defenses can be toxic, we cannot afford to take chances. Plenty of organizations out there looking for an excuse to ban our hobby. Why give them ammunition. Plus gloves help keep soap, graphite grease, and whatever we have touched out of the aquarium.

i use full length gloves. thicker rubber hands to mid forearm and thinner from mid forearm to shoulder. keeps me dry and not stung and keeps soap and stuff out of the tank

Take a look at my Avatar that is why you should wear gloves I hate bristle worms :)

Elmers glue or some 36grit sand paper will take care of that in no time...

I pricked my finger on lr about a month ago and my finger was stiff and swollen for 2 weeks! I was really close to going to the er. Yesterday I poked myself with my frag clippers and its already sore/infected. Not using gloves is risky but alot easier to work with coral. BTW I have a pair of brand new aquagloves for sale $15
