weird frags

i have about 20 different zoa colors and they are all either on rocks or plugs... i have put them in the sandbed of the tank hoping they will attach to the gravel so that i can frag them, but they mostly continue to grow under the plug or rock, instead of outwards,, is this normal, what am i doing wrong?

Zoanthids need a pretty stable substrate to grow out onto. They probably won't grow off their rock or plug unless you set them on another rock or have them sitting in crushed coral.

If they are in crushed coral or a comperable coarse substrate, they need to be undisturbed for long periods of time to the polyps/mat can reach out. This means no bumping or moving from snails and hermits.

You can make a cup or bowl of crushed coral about half full and sit the frags in there to grow out. If the cup is glass, it will keep the crabs from climbing in.

IME, they will grow under the plug or rubble a bit but once they stop receiving enough light they will start to spread onto whatever they can to get light.

i grow a lot of my zoas in the sand, i just bury a frag disc right next to the colony so it can grow right onto it.
