Well Im gonna do it.......

Moving on Up
After some debate and the loss of a few nice fish, I am treating my reef with Quinine Sulfate. I think the tank has brook and velvet together. My clowns look all discolored and it appears the scales are falling off. My Crosshatch triggers have stuff all over them.......At this point its worth a shot to give it a try. I am leaving the lights off in the tank for a few days to hopefully keep things calm till I get the Quinine. I looked at the Crosshatch when I got home from work today and he appeared to be less covered. Not sure if the lights being off had anything to do with it or its just a coincidence. I will let everyone know how I make out. The tank is loaded with soft coral, anemones, shrimp and snails.....If it works great if not I think I will be getting out of the large tank buisness.....

More to come. I should have the Quinine Thursday or Friday.

Wow. You've had some kind of trouble over the past few months. What do you think is causing all your issues?

BTW, if your fish have Brook, QS won't cure it. You need Formalyn. That is the ONLY thing that will cure brook.

Good Luck.

I'll be very interested to see how this turns out, and I hope it turns out for the better. I know how challenging dealing with diseases is, so it would be very nice to know if there was a reef safe treatment that truly worked. I've got my fingers crossed that it will. :)

According to what I've read on WetWebMedia, quinine sulfate is also effective against brook according to Bob Fenner. I've never personally used it on a confirmed case of brook though.

I agree. But these guys say it will work on brook.( http://www.fishyfarmacy.com/fish_diseases/marine_ich.html) I don't know if its supposed to be reef-safe. I doubt it. Unfortunately, both brook and velvet may not wait. They are very quick killers. For what its worth, you may have only velvet; brook will slough off all the skin and there is a ton of excess slime on the fish. I hope your fish hang in there.

I was told QS works on both Brook and Velvet. It is not reef safe by design, but some information I got from a person that has been using it for 30 plus years has me keeping the faith that it will work. Time will tell....

Yes its been a rough one for my fish indeed.....Almost thinking about packing it in....

I have no idea what is causing the issues. I have no voltage issue, the water quality is great. I must have introduced the disease somehow. Not sure how!!!!!

Not sure if this helped or what....But all day yesterday I left the lights off. When I got home from work last night I checked the trigger with a flashlight and he looked fairly clean. I even put food in the dark tank and the female and male came out to eat it. I have half the lights coming on today so I will have a better idea when I get home tonight.

Hopefully the Quinine will be here tomorrow.

With almost all parasites, you'll go through periods of very light visible infestation. Its just part of the life-cycle and usually means to watch out for the next round. When you are treating, it is a good sign, though.

RBU, still got the hybrid tang?

Nope Dead.

I lost 3 fish in the past 3 weeks.

Scribbled Angel
Townsend Angel
Hybrid Achilles

My Crosshatch pair are hanging on hopefully the treatment works and they make it till then.

The black and white clowns are hanging on looking bad but still eating.

Have not seen my multi colored pygmy angel in a couple days so I assume its dead also.

Yellow Coris Wrasee seems to be uneffected.

If I can save the crosshatch pair I will be happy.

If anyone listens to anything on these forums PLEASE take this advice don't just QT you have to treat everything. Or you run the risk of problems......

Thanks....Its a pain in the A$$.. Sometimes I ask myself why bother with this hobby....

Sorry man :(

I'm finally taking a much needed break from the hobby, but I know if and when I do comeback someday the same ol issues will be hanging around to vex me. It can be a very tough hobby, mentally, sometimes. Fight the good fight and remember that bad things happen to the best of us. Hope you have some success with the QS!

Thanks. I will keep this thread updated with the progress....

If you get so frustrated and you feel you want to "pack it in", instead why not just focus on corals? With no fish (or only one or two survivors) in the tank you should have no problem keeping an ULNS and SPS's would grow like mad. You could easily have a killer SPS tank without most of the frustration you are now having.

Just a thought.

Good Luck.

Thanks, but I like fish more than corals. I was thnking about a Fish Only but not sure I would like the look of a plain rock filled tank. If this Quinine does not work I will probably pack it in. Anyone in the market for a nice 300 gallon tank???????

OK so last night when I got home from work around 7PM I changed out my carbon reactor and added 6 scoops of Quinine Sulfate to the Reef Tank by adding some tank water to a cup and mixing it up. I then poured it slowly into my sump near my return pumps. No ill effects noticed last night and none noticed this morning. I did notice an increase in PH but nothing of concern. I checked the fish this morning with a flashlight and still have not seen any improvement in the parasites on their bodies. Hopefully it will start to do something soon. More to come....
