For the first time since, well ever, I have the AC set to keep the house at a balmy 78 degrees.

While that may not be the mose comfy for us, it works for the fish, and will only cost me an arm and a leg all summer :-)

Cheers!

I do the same...I don't need to bother with the expense of getting and running a chiller and I'm comfortable all the time.:D

I prefer it warmer, myself, but while I am without chiller the AC is definately set lower than I would prefer.

Hey Brian, need some good insulating blinds to help keep that AC bill down? I ordered some fancy-schmancy double cell cellular blinds with the cordless lift and everything, and of course they got damaged in shipping. They are sending me another set, but I need looking at these with the busted ends and thinking they could be cut down to fit smaller windows and work fine. Seems a shame to throw them out.

Of course, they match my green carpet, which might not be everyone's cup of tea. :) But hey, the front blind is almost 10 feet long, so even cut down it'll still fit a whole lot of window. :)

Got a link to where you ordered those from Nicole? I am trying to get my wifey to buy off on the idea. We have SOOOOOO many windows in the house its goofy.

I am looking forward to being able to keep the house at 80-82 once I get my chiller in this week. Until then, I am setting the ac at 78. Man my electric bill is going to suck. Thankfully we have some June gloom as of late.

June is our breakin period...In the little bowl I live in , we will see 110, with at least an entire week straight of over 100 in August.

So far we have gotten to 99, but are hovering in the high 80's now. Thank fully my hose only has windows on 2 sides, North and West, so we really do not start the warm up until 1pm.

I went with Blinds.com. Super prices, fast shipping, and unfortunately I can attest that their customer service is great... although I wish I didn't have the opportunity to find out. They didn't question the damage (I sent pics), just sent me an email saying sorry, and the new blinds would leave the manufacturer on Tuesday. You can get actual prices online on their web site and price out everything in different options, which is great for shopping different manufacturers/styles/etc.

Downside is, you have to be REALLY sure what you want and if you measure your windows wrong or pick the wrong color, you are stuck. You can order fabric samples from them, but I just went to Home Depot to look at the manufacturer sample books there. Funny, I was sitting there with the samples and my book of color samples from my house for an hour, and no one offered to help me or price out custom blinds for me. :rolleye1: 3 Day Blinds couldn't build what I wanted and was twice as much money, and tried to hard sell me on their half-custom solution.

Honestly, though, if you windows are old you are better off replacing your windows first. The difference between my 43 year old aluminum single pane garbage and my new vinyl dual-pane low-E glass on my big 10' west-facing window is about 10 degrees, and I haven't seen them perform on a really hot day, yet. The blinds should help another 5 degrees or so, but can only do so much, and if the window were still letting all the heat in...

3/8" double cell in an opaque blind is an R-rating of ~3.8. You can get to ~R5 or so with a double-cell room darkening blind (mylar coated on the inside of the cells), and even higher with a triple cell or a larger cell blind.

What's an Air Conditioner? :D

They have been known to make your electric meter spin....a fact of life for inland denizens...something you coastal people are missing out on.;) :D

Naw, I'm not missing it.

It was a bit hot here this weekend. But the nice costal ocean breeze help cool things down at night. :D

And I already have more than my fair share of things to make my meter spin out of control. ;) Just look at my current tanks. :D

Why are you setting your AC down to 78? 80 should be fine. your tank can handle 80 no problem. I run mine at 80 - 83 this time of year. I raised it one degree over last year to try and keep my eletric bill concious better half happy. I have 4 fans stagered to come on as soon at the temp hits 80.3, 80.5, 8.6 and 80.7. As of now 11:46 only the sump fan is on. My chiller almost never kicks in and we do not run the AC at all.

If there's a breeze in my neighborhood I can simply open up two windows on opposite sides of the house and have a nice wind tunnel.

If there is no breeze it's AC time!

And I like to be cool, so my wife and I fight over the thermostat. When she walks, or should I say sneaks, by, she turns it up to 75F. When I sneak by I set it to 70F.

But when WarDaddy and family come over I have to keep it a bit warmer, they don't like it when I make the house a freezer :)

Josh

78 for me as well. When my house gets over 80, the tank can climb to 82 when the lights are on. With the thermostat at 78, the AC doesnt turn on untill the house hits 80. I have a 1/3 HP chiller, but I dont want to drill holes in the wall to have it set up outside. That thing would heat up the house something rediculous...its like 7 amps. Ill have to set it up soon I guess.
