Well...this sucks.

Well I was finally hit with the unfortunate glass heater problem. Two reasons I blame myself for it. One, everyone knows eventually it's going to happen. 2, I have a titanium heater I was just being lazy to put in.

Well, came home today to see two of my tangs, powder brown/kole floating a top. I almost knew right away what it was, looked at my temp...59. My tanks inside the garage..Some how a couple clown fish made it threw.

Oh did I forget to mention someone was coming to buy BOTH of them tonight. Bummer.

Will never use glass heater again.

It's always better to learn from someone else's mistakes, but somehow, most of us (including myself) don't get it until it happens to us and it becomes personal.

i think i am going to start recommending the replacement of heaters annually.

seems like a small cost to pay for 'routine' maintenance... and security..

Sorry man that sucks but I think changing heaters every year is the best way either they stop working or they stay on

Really on replacing? I've use the same heaters for 4 years now. On controllers also

i use multiple heaters on a controller. each heat has it's own thermostat which i set 1 degree higher than my aqua controller. That way if my controller fails, the heater has it's own controls, and if a heater fails, i still have a redundant in operation.

Dang I've never used a heater on any of my SW tanks.

Like my current set up closed canopy 50gal 1-250w DE, 2-65w PCs with exhaust fan vented to outside. 4 powerheads (return, skimmer, 2-seio's). Fans set on light timers. Chiller turns on maybe 2-3 times a day and temp flux between 77 and 79.

Im sorry to hear of the loss, that always sucks.

Thanks everyone for the kind words..I was actually running two heathers, one larger and one small..of course it was the bigger one that went..smaller one just couldn't keep up with the chill inside the garage..I am now happy to say the titanium heater is up and running like a champ!

Sorry to hear about your loss.

I have always ran two (titanium) heaters with each sized to be capable of maintaining the tank's temp. Always on controllers (currently an Apex)- never trusted the built in thermostats - and always controlled as "primary" and "backup" such that the backup only comes on if the tank temp falls below the lower set point of the primary heater (which essentially never happens is the primary is functioning correctly). That means one heater pretty much does all of the work. I switch the two heaters every 6 months so the yearly load on each is about the same. I also have an email alarm sent to me if the backup heater comes on - presumably indicating a primary heater malfunction.

Sorry for your loss. I know how that feels having just went thought it in December.

I am using 2 Aqua Euro ti heaters with an Ranco controller. One is a 300 watt and the other is a 400 watt. If one fails, the other should be enough to keep the tank at a decent temp. I set the heaters just slighter hotter than the Ranco controller just in case the Ranco fails to turn off I will not boil the fish.

you can program your apex to determine the swing. unless you have insufficient heating capacity. how big is your tank and how many watts is your heater?

Tank is 50 g with 18g sump. Heater is 250 watts. Hows that sound? Kinda low?

Ti Heaters are not much better, as most rely on old fashion points and bi metal strips. The points are what fail on most heaters. Cars have not used points in close to 30 years for the same reason.
I like the Aquarium Rena Smart heaters. They are unbreakable and do not use points. I also use multipule heaters on all, but small systems. The odds of 2 heaters failling at the same time are very slim.
