Went to the zoo today

I'd volunteer time and money to make over their tanks. I figure what it costs to take the family to the zoo would more than cover a bucket of salt. There might be some added initial costs for the club, like a water filter, maybe bulbs and water tanks, but then it could be restocked in frags and the public could actually watch a reef grow. It seems like it COULD be a win-win situation. The zoo gets better tanks at a lower cost to them, and the club would get major exposure.

Definately something I think the board ought to discuss, be it totally club sponcered or in conjunction with a consortium of LFS.

I believe it's still maintained by the previous owner of Fishy Business. He been maintaining those tanks for years.

I think it may be one of the girls from petco who is maintaining it now. I remember when I worked for Trey she brought in a purple tang with the worst HLLE I have ever seen, that came from the zoo tank. The condition of that aquarium is nothing new...it has been like that for at least 6 or 7 years.

Let me add I don't think the tank is improperly maintained, rather I think they have just stocked the wrong fish.

We went to the zoo two weekends ago and have to agree, those tanks are by far the 2 worst saltwater tanks I've ever seen in my life. It's more an exhibit of fish disease and hair algea than anything else.

I agree with Eric D, we should offer to maintain it or help the people who are maintaining it. Its a Zoo, it should look presentable. I have been to several Aquariums across the US, (Baltimore, Gatlinburg(the best so far), New Orleans pre Katrina, Corpus Christi, and Denver.) I am planning on going to Monterey in Spetember, and I will eventually make it to Shedd, and the Georgia Aquarium. There is no excuse for it to look like that. The other exhibits don't look like that.

on a side note, What about a group outing to the Denver Aquarium with a behind the scenes tour? I did one in Baltimore when I lived there, and it was pretty sweet.

that makes sense then.................It looks like a (former owner of FB) tank

I think it's a cool idea us teaching the staff and helping with the equipment selection/maintenance, as long as the club gets a sign that will gain us more membership. I would say we would want to wait till the tank looks good before slapping up a sign though.

I would do it

I don't think we should offer to maintain it though as some have suggested. I think if they cannot maintain a tank they should tear down the exhibit then.
Other than club exposure I can't see why we would want to burden our already busy members with that.
I mean how many members can even find the time to attend 1 meeting a year let alone take on driving up the mountain to maintain a tank every day or every other day?
I can't do it and I can't see why we should.

I think like I said before offering to help get them on the right track and get one person at the zoo to sign up on RC and attend a meeting would help.

Maybe someone should volunteer to drive up to the zoo and find out who maintains the tanks and see if they even have any interest in us helping out somehow first. Then at the meeting next weekend between all of the members we could make a descision.

Your thought's?

Chris

I tried calling today, they took my name and number, but said they wern't able to have some1 speak with me at the moment. If I can get a time set up with someone to talk it wouldn't be so bad. I personally would hate to drive all the way up there and not get a chance to speak with someone. I'll keep tryin though.

Good idea, thanks for checking on that. I was just thinking we need to start with asking them before getting too carried away.
let me know what you find out.
Chris

I will do it I dont do eney thing all day I will be happy to do it if thay want some one to do it

Its still sitten in the D*** bucket!! cant get a hold of the ex to get my tank back!!! GRRR. But I am sure its gonna be great. Ill post a pick if i EVER get it set up.
