Were the Master DOC skimmers at MACNA

Now, if only you would make them with a smaller footprint. I saw the one at Rick's...that thing's a monster...well suited for a 1000G tank! I really wish Tunze would consider making a MASTER DOC that doesn't require 18" of sump space.

The pumps are too strong for anything much smaller. As I said though the pumps are available to DIY and other manufacturers and I know at least one other skimmer manufacturer that is looking at using our pump so there will be other options. The Comline DOC skimmers will still be best suited for smaller tanks, these really were designed for bigger systems.

Steve, my results are that they are close to the same in performance but we ran both of them on the same tank that is fairly stable and doesn't have much added to it, so there isn't much to skim out. The 9420 skimmate was darker but a little less in volume, the 9020 was lighter but greater in volume and I would guess that the removal of waste was virtually identical. The 9420 uses half the power and half the number of pumps to do it though and it is upgradeable to a 9440 just by adding a pump.

Thanks I guess the pump upgrade would be the reason to have bought this skimmer but if it performs the same the electricity usage would also be a good reason.

What I meant by smaller footprint was not so much a smaller diameter body, but, rather, the pump and outlet could have been oriented a little differently to allow those with say, 16" wide sumps fit one of these in it. It looks like, in the interzoo flyer, that the outlet tube is directly across (or close to this) from the pump -- they look to be near 180 degrees from each other. If the skimmer outlet had been situated, say, at 90 degrees to the pump's inlet, it could probably decrease the amount of space this skimmer would take up. Do you think Tunze would be opposed to doing this? I am to be upgrading my skimmer shortly, and, I would really like one of these seemingly well engineered skimmers rather than the majority of the other needlewheels out there. Not to mention the lack of need of adjusting the skimmer.

If you want to retrofit an existing, competitor brand's skimmer with a new hydrofoamer pump, what size outlet does the pump use, and what water level should be maintained for the pump? My current skimmer compartment is held at 8" of water height.

The outlet is 3/4", I think the 8" should be fine, just so long as most of the pump is submerged.

They may actually fit in a 16" sump, the way it should read is the widest section is about 18.5". The reason for the wide spacing is that if you buy a 9420, it is predrilled and already has all the fittings to make it a 9440 so the extra space is room for the second pump.

Roger, will the 9420 require 6" of space to remove the cup too???

It is a bit less than 6" but the neck on all of them is the same, you might check out Rick's, the 9420 has the same length neck.

Had I not ordered a Deltec a couple weeks ago, I would have definitely looked into the 9420. . .

I'm guessing the master doc skimmers will be too big for 100 gallon or less tanks? Just thought I'd ask because I been following several 9010/9015 threads and some are saying wait for the master doc's...What would you say the minimum for a 9420 for gallon tanks?

I've ruled them out now, Johnathan....I was willing to make a bigger sump to fit this skimmer in, but, the height clearance to remove the cup is just too much. I have 27" of space to play with, and the skimmer's 23"-24" tall, and needs almost 6" to remove the cup. I'm disappointed now that I'll have to go with Deltec or H&S, as I was really stoked about the Master DOCs.

6" to remove the cup?! Lord! And you would really have thought tunze would have taken this into consideration. I havent been over to ricks to check the beast out, ill have to get over there soon and see it.

Yes, but the unions other use are not that convenient either, this design is essential to our auto adjust feature. It is less than 6" but I don't know the actual measurement.
