I would choose the 30gal. as it should be cheaper and you can design it the way you want. melevsreef.com has some good designs.

JME & JMO: avoid wet/dry (aerobic "bio" media ) filtration in a reef aquarium.

I am going to get the ASM G2. A 29/30 Gallon tank. What else goes into the sump?

Heater (many use two, in case one fails)
Mechanical filtration

Sumps can hide thermometers, probes, etc. etc.
I also run a bag of carbon in my sump.
