I had never seen anything from LA fishguys before. Watched an episode on a rbta tank and man is that announcers voice annoying. Don't think I could watch any more of them if its the same guy talking.

I'm watching the 400 gallon bowfront build part 3. He got a wet/dry that wont fit into the stand. That sump is hardly the size of a 20g. I dont know how he made that mistake(doesnt fit) or he purposely did so. That would look bad on him to the owner of the house.

Newyorksteelo is someone that I cannot watch. Beyond annoying!!!

Jim Stime Jr is awesome. Yes, his voice is an acquired taste, but his show is the most entertaining IMO. And sure, he made a mistake with the W/D filter for the 400g bow, but he's man enough to show it in his videos. He could have skipped his mistake, but he showed it anyway. Showing us in the hobby that everyone makes mistakes. I did the same thing a few years ago when setting up a tank.

I like all three to be honest. I also at times find that newyorksteelo will talk a little too much and drag on about somethings. In his defense though they are important things that maybe he wants to hammer into your head.

You also have to remember he is making these videos for pretty much nothing. It probably takes a lot of time, effort, and equipment to make them.

i use to watch new york steelo and mr. swt but not so much anymore. it seams like almost every time i see a new video from mr.swt hes always trying to sell something then give information. and a lot of his equipment reviews are bias which is very annoying.

and NYS is pretty good too but i do agree he goes off topic most of the time and takes 10 mins. to get to the point. very frustrating. one good thing about him is that most of his reviews are unbiased since hes not selling any of the stuff.

Both of the above are OK for those entering the hobby because they can give you an idea of how to set up and maintain a salt water aquarium. However, IMO that's where it stops.

LA Fishguy would prefer we all run wet dry trickle filters. He even said he didn't like Vortech pumps because they were too "mystical" to operate. If you get a chance to see one of his old videos where he doses alkalinity and calcium into a tank, you'll understand why he's not the right guy to be listening to if you're getting into reefkeeping. He holds Parts A and B of B-Ionic over a tank and proceeds to squirt them simultaneously into the tank as he counts to three. I've never heard of anyone doing this. He also ran tap water through carbon as he mixed it into his fresh saltwater holding container in his garage that he takes to clients' homes or businesses to perform a water change. I guess this guarantees that the tank will get algae and they'll need his services more often.

With newyorksteelo, he always has an answer for everything. He's even gone so far as to say in one of his videos that there are other ways, but his way is the best way to set up a reef aquarium. Pretty arrogant if you ask me, especially since he's a deep sand bed disciple and those really aren't as plentiful or popular as they were 20 years ago for obvious reasons. I stopped watching a few years back. Sometimes I use to just look him up to hear him say the word "aquarium". He can't even debate intelligently when you disagree with him (ask how I know), and instead backpedals and keeps re-iterating the same things. He sort of reminds me of those that speak loud and slow to foreigners as if they're going to understand any better.

I suppose if you don't have someone to show you the ropes and you aren't willing to search online forums and read some books for an overview of the hobby, you'll run into these kinds of people. As with anything though, it's always best to read and get opinions from many people to see what methodology works for you, your pocket, and what you're trying to keep.

LA Fishguy: Pretty cool personality and if you like Jack Nicholson's voice, its a plus. I dont like that he is so old school and doesnt brush up on new technology and better himself/his ways. Like said, too many things mysticle? Come on man, take a class or something!? He had an episode where a guy backed out of a deal and left him hanging with some $$ from a order he in good faith placed. For three of the part 3 episodes, man did he bleeech n complain in each one, with a 2 minute story of the same thing. Then, in the end, he said he got paid. Didnt even give the guy that paid props. Not like the guy told him to go pound sand. Guy said never mind, Jim said if you want to make things right and the guy paid. Simple as that and no thank you. That kinda ****ed me off about him, but not enough to stop watching.

Newyourksteelio(sp): Man, can that guy rattle on, and, seems he feels like he know what you HAVE to do. So many ways to kill a bird with a stone.

Mr Saltwater : Kinda like steelio in the way he thinks he know how it HAS to be done, but, I would say the better of them all, but, not by much, lol.

To be fair he complained about the LFS guy who he contacted to maintain one of his jellyfish tanks being planned in some Dentist's office down in Louisiana I think. It was gonna be like a $10k job and the LFS guy talked the dentist out of the jellyfish tank and sold him on a conventional setup that HE could install and sell. The jerk deserved to be publicly excoriated for stabbing a guy in the back that was setting him up for a maintenance gig, not that he even mentioned the guy's full name, I think he just called him "Bucky". The dentist felt bad and agreed to buy the LED lights that Stime had already bought the components for but his ire was really aimed at the LFS guy not the dentist. I don't know about you but if I was screwed out of a 10k sale and got a consolation sale of a few hundred bucks I'd be angry too. That said Stime should have been under contract with all parties to begin with it still was a sucky thing to do do someone who contacts you in good faith for a job.

I don't love everything he does but he does seem to run with an interesting cast of characters which I find entertaining and while his voice is a bit much it makes me think he was some kinda of failed radio dj that got into fish tanks etc.

Jim outwardly said how the dentist put him in a pickle backing out, over and over. Jim never said thank you to the dentist, who was under no real contract whatsoever to do the right thing, AND, apparently did do the right thing with just a gesture request of good faith.

Oh, I agree about the LFS. I would have visited good ol bucky with a portable nail gun. Ol bucky would have been called good ol buck tooth after I got ahold of him, if he was lucky.
