what about sterilization for humans?

Basically, I was just wondering how dangerous it is to not wash my hands after every time i stick them in the tank. Now, Im not talking about touching corals I'm just talking about adjustments to vitals and surface water. Because i do use latex gloves when doing anything extensive like fragging or aquascaping. Can anyone shed some light on the topic? just in a general sense. For example , can i catch a parasite while smoking a cigarette after putting my hands in surface water?

Ps: im not talking about Zoa toxins or blue rings, just surface water. Is a fw rinse enough or should i always use soap?

It is a lot more dangerous for your corals to be touched by you, than it is for you to touch coral. Wash your hands BEFORE you go into the tank.

Im always paranoid about there being soap left over on my hands when Im putting them into the tank so I always use really hot water w/o soap.

yea i get paronoid abotu the soap as well. sometimes i think that a good wash with stress zyme helps for big cleanings on actual vitals therefore no toxins ar left.for example sometimes i will cycly my water polisher for a few hours in high content of stress zyme. i have found that this is also a good idea to break in new filters before bieng dependant on the show tank. or just to rid chem of new products.does anyone else do this?

iv just spent 8 days off of work with the runs, the only thing i had different to my partner was a mouth full of old salt water out of a external filter that had been unplugged for about 6 weeks...

Any water that sit for six weeks is a breeding ground, but old filter water:crazy1: Sorry for your pain, I'd rather need stitches than go through that.

I wash with soap rinse good with a brush. Rinse with vinegar. rinse with water again, dry. I smoke, outside only.

sorry for the spelling errors Ive had a few, and the good old cerebral cortex is running on full!
I can't spell a thing. I use IESpell for forums and stuff it's a lot faster than the spell checker here.

I think its good practice to wash your hands before and after you put them in the
tank. Just make sure you rinse them very well before putting them in tank.

I think you should for sure wash yours hands very well with anti bacterial soap after
you have them in the tank water. I scrub my hands with a small soft scrub brush
and anti bacterial soap every single time after I have them in the tank.

This is very good link about human health and aquariums...

Thanks I could not stop laughing :D

It is always a good practice to wash your hands. Most people do not know this, but hand washing is probably the best public health measure that has been enacted in the past couple of centuries.

Having said that, the entire world is covered by microorganisms, including in ocean water. Think about how we desire to populate our tanks with bacteria to process nitrogenous waste. Washing your hands with soap and water does not sterilize your hands unless you use special soaps and wash for at least 30 seconds. Even then your hands get re-populated with microorganisms very quickly.

While I am unaware of any studies looking at cross infection between human and ocean based micro-critters, I suspect that the risk of cross infection from casual contact is very low. That's because complex organisms have well developed defenses against infection and few microorganisms are actually pathogenic (disease causing).

So I recommend that you be careful and practice good hand washing techniques, but do not get paranoid about it.

If I have my hands in & out of the water a lot like doing general maintenance, I just rinse in tap water & dry off.

When I am done for a while - like going out to smoke.... THEN I use soap.

Just watch around the LFS when they are working. If they were paranoid about the water, they would never get any work done.
