Don't mess around with LEDs.

Once you have some experience and success if you want to experiment then go for it. Use something that is guaranteed success to eliminate variables that may be causing you issues. Does that make sense? That rule applies to many many things

I'm already set up with LEDs so I'll have to experiment a little. I was planning to try Seriatopora (birdsnest) first but I'm really interested in brightly colored encrusting montipora and cyphastrea (LPS? or SPS?).

This is going back a long, long ways to the first half of the nineties, but the idea that "PS corals don't require food" would be one on my list.

Another one would be: Because of the effectiveness of XXX coral dip, a coral QT tank is unnecessary.

Yes it makes total sense, but there are not many people with practical common sense.

Those are good ones too! Forget the whole 0/0 crap when it comes to nutrients. Aefw are your worst enemy if you keep Acropora

i + LED, fried my sps on my old tank when i bought them. I wish someone had introduced me to the ATS for water control, also those BRS videos explaining the real value of knowing chemistry. I figured water changes would be enough as i was doing them weekly but only 5% and this was not close to demand. Which leads to buying good tests. Quality water tests are vital, I cannot wait until they come out with a water reader for all parameters that is constant. Mind streaming is developing one and when it comes out if it is affordable and works it will be my number 1 recommendation. Last thing would be for someone to point me to tank of the month threads, so i could see what is working on these amazing tanks to mirror them. If it works for others in 9/10 cases then its hard to argue its a bad idea. good luck birdsnests are the right starter sps.

Don't take advice from people who can't show a proven successful track record. Don't try and use LEDs without a PAR meter to dial in intensity. Don't take advice from anyone who says LEDs don't work because they obviously don't know what they are talking about. Don't believe the notion that a ulns is necessary for success.

Had a chuckle over the absolute no LED's for acro's. Come on guys google is your friend!

I run LED's (Mitras) with success. BUT.... I sometimes I wish I hadn't sold my ATI T5. :headwallblue:

That said....after scorching my corals and learning that I needed about half the intensity as I thought looked right, my corals look great again. Even with a PAR meter that have now have, stay around 300 or so where your most light lovin' corals reside. I still dont think I'm getting the growth I should but I dont know if I ever got what I wished for anyway.

Long story short......Many advantages to LED' but somebody should have slapped me silly when I gave up my ATI's.

I have a few more. Don't buy LEDs to try and save money. You need double the manufacturer recommended number of LED modules.

Very useful! Thanks!

I'm glad I'm planning way ahead in advance! I'm pretty busy with life so my tank is going to need some regulation; unfortunately, not an economical option for me right now!

Thanks for all the great advice!

Start off with high quality equipment from companies with good reputations.

Stay away from 120volt ac propeller pumps. IME they tend to run backwards after a power disruption and the impellers swell and jam on a regular basis. The motor block seals tend to be poorly done as well which can lead to either tank loss or electrocution hazard.

Use a Titanium ground probe and check to see that the circuit it's plugged into actually has a good ground. People have lost tanks due to false tripping by GFCI's.

Try not to use power bars near the sump. If you have to, check them monthly for signs of heating/burning and replace them yearly.

If you need a heater, make sure it is plugged into a temperature controller.

Design your system for ease in maintenance and safety redundancy. ie heater.
