What anemone for True Percs?

I have two true percs and want to find an anemone for them to host. I know it's more dependant on the indivual fish but what anemone seems to have the best success rate with true percs? Thanks,

My percula have not been picky. If you are new to anemone keeping, start out with BTAs.

I have an RBTA and a Pair of true perc, not to hijack your thread but aside from patience what is a good way to introduce them to the anemone? The clowns don't leave the to 1/3 of the tank.

True percula originally host Heteractis magnifica and Stichodactyla gigantea.

You can try BTA but 50/50 or it will take some time.

I just picked up a beautiful "Metallic" BTA (whatever "metallic" means), and my true percs took to it in two days. They were with an anemone in a friends tank about 2 years ago, but not at all since then, just swimming around the surface like idiots. It was a Ritteri anemone they were hosting, and now they are hosting the BTA just fine. I have seen numerous true percs hosting BTAs.

Yes, True Percs + Sticho Gig = Match made in heaven !

If you have a mated pair, it wont be long-like days, till they nest up in the Sticho Gig and mate.

I forgot to mention, Sticho gig's are considered one of the most difficult anem's to maintain. Please read up the sticky note above - "Anem FAQ" before making a decision.

they must not be used to a nem, they have been in the tank for 3 weeks now and the RBTA for about 2.... Clowns are happy and RBTA is wonderful but the clowns wont pay any attention to it yet... anyway I guess it is a waiting game unless there is anything I can do to teach them that is where to go.

In many tanks I've noticed that the clowns look for location as much as what the animal is. I've seen clowns that will take to an anemone, but then if it moves more than a few inches, they'll stay where it used to be, and will host in another anemone or coral if you put it where the first anemone was.

Some clowns will take to whatever you put in the tank that even marginally resembles an anemone. Others won't host in anything.

My true percs prefer to host a rock on the other side of the tank from my green bta. It's been that way for a couple months now.

My experience as well.

Esp given the short lifespan of many captive anemones [beyond a BTA, an anemone that lasts more than a year or two IME is quite rare - and pretty depressing for such a long-lived creature].

If you have a tank that can handle it and a tight control on water quality - then try an anemone. Be wary on more difficult types, as while a few have long-term luck, many/most don't IMO.

Given `hosting' is a response to threat/fear ... while interesting for us, if your clowns don't host I wouldn't stress it. It means that you don't scare the crap out of them [nor their tankmates] and IMO that's a good thing.

The way it was taught to me, which I think is a reasonable approach, is that when you truly understand all the reasons you shouldn't get an anemone, then you can consider giving it a shot.
