What are the chances?

I have been offered a Black Hawaiian tang from a vendor for 300.00 3" I have a 210 gl 72 x 24 x 31 that has a Hippo, yellow, purple, and a blonde naso tang already along with a Sargent major. All get along now I did at one time have another yellow but this yellow picked on I had to take back the other yellow tang. all of these fish have been in the tank for about a year and a half and are between 4 and 6 inches.

What do you think the chances are the new fish will be ok? I know its a crap shoot but being as the color is different does anyone think it will survive? How aggressive are the black tangs as compared to the other tangs?

The purple and the yellow will be the two you will have to keep your eye on since all are Zebrasoma. If it were me I would rearrange all the rock work and turn the lights off for the rest of the day and you should be alright. Everytime I add a fish to my tank I rearrange the rock and haven't had a issue yet. I had at one time 5 tangs in my 220g (Achilles,Desjaradini, orange shoulder, maculiceps, and a Tomini) without issues I have since rehomed the Desjaradini and the maculiceps to a 375g

They do not originate in Hawaii, but Christmas Island. Most just pass through Hawaii so they are labeled as "Hawaiian black tang."

The purple and yellow will beat the crap out of the black...

I wouldnt risk a beautiful and pricey fish like a black tang by putting it in with a purple tang and a yellow tang. But its your choice.

Good luck :)

That's what I thought. Thanks for the information. Guess I take the other deal he offered me. For the same 300.00 I will get half a box. 15 assorted acros direct from the importer. The only problems with that is you take what they send, but all will be at least 3 to 4 inches in size. He did offer to let me open the box I pick one then he will pick one until we both have 15. I hope I can find room in my tanks...

These are wild collected acros? Do you have experience with those?

According to him they are from Bali and "they are grown on 20' poles in the ocean"? Assuming they are maricultured but he said some may be wild. As for experience with them I have purchased a few corals from him before that were from the same exporter. I have also bought many corals from LA. I never have any issues with soft corals but SPS I have always had a 50% failure rate.

What extra information do I need to know about wild corals versus maricultured or aquacultured corals? I do plan on dipping them in Coral RX as I generally do with all corals.

Thanks in advance.

Search for Julian sprung reef tank on YouTube and you will see he has 3 zebrasomas and a hippo tang in his aquarium no problem. You should be able to do it. Best way to find out is try it.

+1 if you don't have much experience with wild caught acros I would pass on the box. I did this same thing 2 years ago and ended up with a box of acros that all RTNA and died so I was out 300$ and had 15 dead acro colonies. Not all acros will adapt to aquarium life. I would try and get frags or a box of acros that has had a couple generations In The aquarium setting.
