Hi ,
I have these snail type things all in my sump I believe came on some cheto I picked up from a fellow reefer.
I also have this sand like stuff that is all over my sump wall and on the back wall of my tank. I scrape it off and it just comes back. Thanks , Pete

I also have this. I used to have Chaeto and decided that I would use Bio-pellets instead. I cleaned the sump and "made it look new". a month or two later i have that hard white sand like stuff attached to walls and all equipment. I even have some of those shelled animals your holding in your hand. I hope someone can say what it is and why its there....

The 'sand type stuff' are Serpulid polychaete worms. They form a calcareous shell and are filter feeders. Found in most reef tanks and are actually good since they filter the water.

The 'snail type things' are a species of Limpet snails and are also very common. I have the same type and they clean a bit at night and have done no harm. Of note is that some Limpet species are know to feed on coral tissue, but not these.

Thanks everyone, I have an in sump skimmer and they are hard to get off. What is the best way to remove them from my pumps and skimmer body ? It was a few hour affair to clean my skimmer. Thanks again. One more thing how to you get rid of them ?

Those are limpet snails. They feed on bacterial film on smooth surfaces.
They are internal brooders and can be extremely prolific.
Many wrasses will eat them.
They are completely harmless.

Thanks again . I have a Tusk in my display tank I guess thats why I do not see any in it. What types of wrasse will eat them? If they are small enough I can put one in my sump.

These limpets too can eat the polyps of sps. They are algae grazers but can be confused by the sps and can eat them by mistake. The white little spots are Spirorbid worms.

Best way to clean skimmer body and other pumps is to remove them and run them in a bucket or large plastic container with warm water and vinegar. I run my skimmer, Power heads and pumps for about 1 hour and all tubeworms, limpets, coraline algae either falls right off or can easily be scrubbed off

Those tiny tube words hurt like a hypodermic needle if they get you in the hand used to have those all over the back of my rocks
