What are you guys looking for?

After seeing the responses to the FOR SALE threads in the Pittsburgh forum, I was curious to know what everyone's looking for as far as coral goes.

1. Do you only buy local? If not, which websites do you frequent?

2. What types are you looking for, ie SPS, LPS, Z and P, softies?

3. Any specifics, ie if LPS, are you looking for chalices, acans, favias, etc? If SPS, looking for acros, montis, ORA stuff?

4. Do you prefer large frags or colonies, or small frags at a lower price to grow out?

I usually don't buy anything during college and just let the frags I acquire during summer grow out. But now that I found a local club not sure if I can still do this lol. I usually look for smaller frags and grow them out. Right now I'm looking for nice Z's and P's, Ricordeas, and colorful sps. I almost exclusively do trades or buy from other reefers. And besides that there is one other LFS i go to locally.

this question gets asked a lot, and never answered.

A lot of the times its, I don't know until i see what you have.

1)Only local for now, as i'm a noob and I don't know any better yet. I frequent 3 LFS(elmers, wetpets, aqwaworld)

2)LPS, Z and P, softies (in that order)

3) LPS (anything and everything, again i'm a noob so even the not so rare stuff makes me happy), zoas same things. Obviously the more colorful the better, i just like seeing things grow and having success with them.

4) Would much rather have a smaller frag and watch them grow into my own colony.

btw your stuff you've been posting lately has been awesome, hoping some day to have that good a collection myself, just have to be patient i guess.

Like AHDOnline inferred, images help a lot.

If it's a low/moderate care coral, easy to grow, and looks gorgeous then it will get sold fast.

Try posting some pics of your Zoa's. They'll be out the door in no time.

I am in the "if it looks cool" club.
I personally would never spend 75 dollars on something the size of a pencil eraser just cause someone called it "virgin brides nipple chalice".....

I am into anything stony sp or LP right now. I have a few misc things that have floated into the tank but mainly going for color now.

Locals the way to go.

If it was a tyree virgin brides nipple chalice I would buy it, but not just any nipple chalice......

Jared, I will try to stop tomorrow morning.

You already know my situation well enough, but just to add to everyone else's replies:

1) Local only for several reasons - no shipping cost, better survival rates, chance to see before buying, support of local reefers.

2) As you and raynist both know, mainly zoas and palys, but I'm also interested in a small (colorful) acan lord frag and a small (colorful) ricordia frag. Someday. :)

3) Aside from what I said above, nothing specific. I'm not very hung up on fancy names, just interested stuff that won't be too aggressive and trash my zoas and palys. But regardless of species, I do like the more colorful varities that often have the fancy names.

4) Tiny frags, as small as is feasible, so I can watch them grow (and because I'm usually broke and pretty frugal even when I'm not). Personally, that's the most enjoyable part for me. My very first frag of palys (nuclear green) from brettnleslie has gone from two very tiny polyps to ten polyps (two of which are larger than nickels) in less than two months. I've enjoyed feeding them and watching them grow, they are my little babies. But that's just me.

I want a virgin brides nipple challice just based on the name alone.

I can always come up with something and name it that.... then i can charge you a ridiculous amount of money just to call it yours.

I would much rather buy local, not that I haven't ordered online before, but I have to agree that I would much rather have a chance to look at what I am buying. Plus if I can support a local reefer and save myself money, then both people benefit.

Well that being said if anyone has any neon green nephthea that they are fragging let me know I would like to get some from you

Thats where my big problem comes from. Ridiculous prices cause someone called it something off the wall and rare.

I also have problems with people that are charging retail for frags to club members. If I have some crazy ORA or tyree or something thats growing good I am not going to gouge the next guy the way a LFS did. I thought this club and swaps and trades were meant to get around being basically prison raped on prices cause some guy I never met bleached a coral and the colors came back really cool looking so now its rare cause they screwed up a frag tank.

I was reading about alot of tyree corals and how they purposely "morph" them into something different and suddenly its rare cause they got it to grow different colors after spinking levels and intense lighting. As interesting as it is, its still cruddy to then raise the price 10 fold....
