Was looking to get Clowns and an Anemone for a 20L but was unsure on the type of clown and which Anemone will go best. I'm leaning twds Yellow Stripe Maroons or Onxy Percs.

Let me know what you think...TY

Maroons get large, so if you're planning on that species then also plan on getting a larger tank in the not so distant future. They are a natural symbiont for a BTA (Entacmea quadricolor), the only host anemone species that I would recommend for a 20 gallon.

If I were determined to keep an anemone and a pair of clownfish in a 20 gallon, then I would get a pair of ocellaris and a BTA. Generally ocellaris will be hosted by BTAs, though it isn't a natural host for ocellaris. The reason I would go with the ocellaris in a 20 gallon is because they don't get nearly as large as maroons.

I was going to go with a 40gal breeder but the seller hasn't gotten back to me yet, so I didn't want to make plans about that yet. I just wanted to keep something small. It's my first stab at a reef. I've had FOWLR and FO now to a reef : )

The BTA and Ocellaris sounds good.

lol. I've always heard it the other way around. Either way, ocellaris or percula, they both stay small.

You will want to set your tank up and have it running for several months before adding an anemone. Do your research on BTAs. They are the easiest of the host anemones to keep, but more demanding than ocellaris or perculas in terms of water quality.

Yeah, that shouldn't be an issue. The instinct to be hosted (the anemone is the host, but people get that backward constantly) by an anemone is innate.

The LR & LS will be taken from an established tank. Can use some of the water as well to speed the process. After I do the switch I'll check and double check the parameters.

TY for the info!

How do you plan to cycle the tank? You will want the tank to complete cycling and be stable several months after before adding an anemone.

It's basically just going to be like a tank swap. Moving some rock and sand from my 75gal FOWLR to this.

Current readings...

S.G. - 1.024
pH - 8.3
Ammonia - 0
NO2 - 0
NO3 - 5ppm - Little High?

I just have a basic test kit at the moment. I need to get a test kit for Calc and Iodine I'm sure.

Yeah, ideally the nitrate would be 0, what will you do to get that down (chaeto, remote deep sand bed)? Nitrate of 5 isn't terrible, but for a new anemone, I wouldn't add one unless I were getting an undetectable reading. You will have a protein skimmer, right? In a 20 gallon I wouldn't consider an anemone w/o a good ps. I would get the sg up to 1.025 myself. ph is good. alk okay?

I don't have a kit for that yet. I'll grab one along with a few others this weekend. I'm going to go with a refuge for the tank so I'll grab some Chaeto locally. The tank will still be up and running for a month or so before I place an order.

I was planning on trying http://forum.marinedepot.com/Topic89570-4-1.aspx but I want to do a little more research on it first. Seems to work well from what I've read thus far.

If you don't have a kit, how do you know that the nitrate is 5 ppm?

I would prefer to use chaeto, rdsb, good protein skimming and regular water changes to control nitrates rather than some media, but I'm sure it can help.

I have a basic kit. It only has those tests in it. It was for a FOWLR tank so never felt a need for the others.

My water changes are 15-20% weekly. I will need to purchase a Protein skimmer that's one thing I don't have lying around.

Yeah a protein skimmer and a refugium with chaeto should keep your water quality up, not to mention nice size water changes like you do. I"m sure a BTA and a pair of clowns will thrive with that setup.

a tunze 9002 i think it is. would be a very very good skimmer in a 10g sump. they are very slim. so gives enough room for a fuge and return pump. ....and side note. taking established water to a new tank to help speed up cycling does nothing...if you have established rock and sand. then just use 100% new water. you'll have full trace elements in the tank....the bacteria will be on the sand and rock. it is not in the water column, there for the water does nothing for cycling.
