what clown fish grows the largest?

maroons get the largest. I just bought one "small" sized who is about 3 in. They can get to well over 6". No clue on pairing though; we only plan to have one.

Chrysopterus and Maroons get the biggest. Of the two, maroons are far easier to breed and don't seem to need as big of a tank. Neither needs to be alone to breed. Depending on the clowns other fish in the tank might cement the relationship better or it could be a distraction. If you want to keep a tank with these two and other fish, it should be large (at least 100 gal)

Maroons do get huge but so do chrysopterus. Chrysopterus just aren't seen in the hobby near as much due to their lousy shipping record. Drs. Fautin and Allen list chrysopterus as the largest species. I am willing to trust them on that claim considering their extensive studies on anemone fishes in the field.

i had a massive pair of Chrysopterus. they are big and thick. they are tricky fish also. mine died from a heater mishap. i got a 6" gsm female and the 6" clarkii pair now dwarf the gsm. the gsm are longer clowns and the clarkii complex get ling but they are taller and thicker. so gsm might have the length, but the the clarkii complex has the height and thickness.

Nice! Can you cross bred clowns?

Maroon clownfish are the largest, depending upon your definition. While A. chrysopterus and P. biaculeatus are equal in recorded length, the latter's length-to-mass ratio is actually higher on average by a decent margin. Despite the seemingly more streamlined profile, maroons are actually "chunkier."
