what do u think of this tap water filter?

In my opinion anything would help but think of it this way. Its 30 bucks and it does 50-150 gallons depending on your water before hand. I dont know how big your tank is but i have a 75 gallon and in the summer months i can add up to 3 gallons a day just due to evaporation. So I would think your better off spending 180 bucks on a RO/DI unit rather than buying a few of these things a year. Again just my opinion

Depending on your source water it may only last you one water change. Without a TDS meter you will never know if its working or not and for most people its the "not". Don';t waste your money. Savea little more and get a RO/DI. DI resin by itself has an eextremely short life and at $18 or more per replacement you will rack up a bunch of money in a short time. I know things are not the easiest to get in Canada due to Customs and such but there is a company that goes by Aquasafe Canada tha sells medium quality RO/DI systems for not a whole lot more than what you will spend on that thing and one or two replacement cartridges. Also get a handheld TDS meter if you get either one of them or you are guessing at your water quality.

I had one a looong time ago for a 10g FW tank when I was young (a kid) and looking for a cheap, easy solution. Long story short, I hated it. Never got the results I wanted and always (no matter what I did) ended up w/ the tiny beads in my water. I would rather haul water from the store than deal w/ one of those again. Get an RO/DI. JMO.

I have one of these. I still have 2 replacement cartridges left.

I ended up buying a typhoon III recently. To be honest. I felt the same as you as trying to get by relatively inexpensive.

My water at home must really stink (although I didn't try it with a TDS meter only by color change). The color change made it as far as 6 gallons of water; I would stretch it to 9, but by then you could smell the difference.

I think you should try to save your money and purchase an RO/DI system. The replacement cartridges alone that you will use will pay for the RO/DI.

I have my typhoon III set up to the faucet with the faucet adapter, so that when I move I can take it with me. I also bought a hose adapter just in case.

HTH.
