I want my corals to grow to the point to where I cannot control the coraline, but I don't think it works for the pics posted of the first tank.
what do you guys think of my tank?

I actually think it has a good deal of potential. I like the minimal rock work look although I definitely agree, there seems a great deal of algal growth on the glass which should at least be scraped off. Also I would have no idea that was xenia on your glass in the corner if you hadn't mentioned it. I thought it was just a thick layer of algae. I don't want to sound rude or overly critical as each person's personal preference varies, I personally like a rock filled look and think the coralline growing on the back plate of glass in my aquarium looks nice. But I'm meticulous about keeping the front and sides clean. Obviously you enjoy your tank which is the primary goal of keeping one but you shouldn't respond so defensively about others comments when you display it publicly.

Wow my glass was clean when I posted my 90 growout in the SPS forum recently and I didn't get this many hits!!! Controversy must sell. I will have to repost and headline it with "does this shirt make me look fat" or tape centerfolds on the back glass...or something. [Ya know...keeping with the whole dirty glass theme

Keightly1981, your tank will come along with time. Hammer back and forth over the TOTM winners articles and seek out their build threads if they are posted. Take what you can use and ditch the rest. You'll have a flawless system that noone can question. Keep at it.

To joke a bit (thats all, joking!) if you emptied the tank and put a barbie and a GI Joe in there, it would make the perfect set for a SAW movie!
Kidding aside, all looks healthy, you left room for growth, and Im sure it will thrive into a masterpiece. Its not the current pic that matters, but what someone can visualize it to look like in 1-3-5 years. Im young, and my generation is not that visual. Some used to listen to sports broadcasts on the radio, I had colour TV since day 1!

Having a background is not beneficial to the reef if your looking at the reef's overall health. It's better to leave it plain glass so it reflects more light.
Hobby experience is not the only thing that can make someone worthy of keeping a reef tank with particular species in it.
It's all a matter of Patience, Education, Research, and Due Diligence.

It has tons of potential, you have plenty of rock in the sump and your water is crystal clear. I see no nuisance algae or anything bad. Once you get some new bulbs in it will probably look drastically different. Hope everything goes well and keep us updated.

I was reading an article in a TFH magazine from a couple months back, and they did an experiment to see if adding a black or blue background affects the par that reaches the corals near the back. What they discovered is that if you paint your glass black it does indeed reduce the amount of light, but if you just get a plastic black background and tape it to the tank the par isn't effected. I would say a black background would definately add to your tank.

pfhh hahaha that is to funny! I'm sory but I got to go with the croud on this one clean the glass on all sides. Clean glass makes the tank look a milion times better. Your corals look good and I like the scape it leaves tons of room for your coral to grow. I would move the frag rack to the side of the tank if you insist on keeping it. Gel super glue dose wonders for holding frags in place tell they encrust.
You know, now that I actually look at those pictures posted in #1 of the tank, I think this thread was meant as a joke. Take a look at that picture of the square cut frag, kinda a joke...and the modest frag tray with a puke green background...and in the last pic, we see about 4 powerheads pointing all over the place...lol... Brilliant post, really, in retrospect.

just rearrange the circ pumps and change the color theme with new bulbs towards the blue spectrum and your little slice of the ocean will be fine ..hang in there I hear the bell ringing round 12 is over I hope
