the mesh mod is where you take the impeller out of the pump, and remove the needles from the impeller and then secure a piece of mesh to it. this is believed to make the bubbles smaller and more in number to make the skimmer more efficient at protein removal. you can search for all of the mods talked about in this thread with a general search.
There are some nice ASM mods in this thread. This guy in general did some wild DIY with everything. Worth looking through the pictures at least of this old thread.
