What do you think about the IO salt thing??

It's only one study. I think it is very interesting info. I would like to see how it is analyzed and more details.
I used to use IO and it worked fine. I switched to Reef Crystals a few months ago. I don't know if I'm noticing major changes, but my tanks are happy. If a brand has worked for people, why change? Testing it out over an extended period is a bit of work... more than I care to take on
It's just a hobby for me so I'd like to keep it as simple as possible. I'll likely just stick to Reef Crystals. If one brand is noticably better, maybe I'll try that some time.

The only thing I don't like about the study is there was only one tank of each sample. Something could have happened to that one IO tank that made the results what they where. I would like to see this test at least repeated once before I start throwing away my IO. Now, would I buy Reef Crystals? Sure, just because I will normally go with reefcrystals if it is available and not $10+ bucks more a bucket.
I have set up enough tanks to know that sometimes a tank you start up will have some problems that others will not. I set up a half dozen tanks once, all 10 gal, all using IO, all using the same sand and all the liverock was out of the same tank that I had for well over a year. This was a quick breeding set-up. Light was the same. Bioload was very close to the same, but I had one tank that always had cyano in it. Why only one?? I have no clue. If that could happen to me, why not them?

meh, I'll probably continue to use it. If anything goes "wrong" I don't think I could pinpoint it to being the salt.
Wouldn't switching salt be more traumatic than staying with the same stuff even if it gets "bad press"?

Just a reminder, even though we all know this...if you just top off your water, but also empty the skimmer...your water will get less salty over time. The End.

I dunno if I'm too tired but i want to the link provided and it seemed like another version of this thread, I'm guessing someone published results from a particular test.
But as to aquariums using it, you should know 1) Aquariums use LARGE quantities of it, so any irregularities from bag to bag pretty much get averaged out (and by bag I mean those 1000 pound bags/1000gallons worth?). 2) They also use a multitude of other chemicals, not just the straight salt, I noticed on the steinhart tour they had bags of Calcium Chloride(??) piled almost as high as the instant ocean bag. Along with that I'm sure they had other such chemicals to tweak the final product to their liking. Bottom line they did not use straight from the bag product into tank. 3) THey have MUUUUUUUUUUUCH better testing equipment than what we have, so if they see any irregularities they can catch it before it goes into tanks.

I've been using IO for over 30 years and don't plan on changing because of a new 'salt study'...
