we started breeding a. polymnus a few months ago and have babies that are just about ready to go. we have no idea what a fair price for them is.

from all the research we have done it seems that we are the only people to have successfully done this, should this play into the price?

heres a photo of them, common name is saddleback clown, brown variant

You being the only ones to have successfully bred these fish should definitely play into the price. When I was breeding reptiles and amphibians that was always something I considered when I sold them. Rarity of captive bred stock.

Absolutely. Take a look at the reptile world. Folks that breed say, albino burmese pythons have a hard time giving them away. But people who breed albino ball pythons are getting upwards of 3K per snake. The difference is soley in availability. You have a limited window of opportunity before the market saturates, my advice would be to get as much as you can, while you can.

Congrats. Breeding fish is something I would like to get into in the future, but have little time or funds at this point. The clown fish aren't likely to get old and die quickly. Start the price out high and then work it down as you get a feel for the demand. Least that is what I would do.

Congratz on breeding them. When they are sellable, if you plan on selling any to local reefers, I may be interested, I wanna get some clownfish and am trying to decide between skunks or saddles haha.

As for the price, that I am not too unsure, but if its too high, it may be unlikely that people will buy them. But like I said I'm not all that sure about it.

I think what he is referring to is a "brown variant" not the species. Though a Google search for "saddleback clown, brown variant" results in nothing.

ah yes, I just could have sworn I read about them being bred somewhere haha. But I must have imagined it because I can't remember nor find any reference to it.

EDIT: I found something

Saddle

Not necessarily. Saddleback males often reach the same size as females. Brown variant is commonly available captive bred. They are sold sexless (in most cases) due to their young age. If you get two juvs from the same batch they will pair up eventually. The price that was quoted to you suggests that these clowns were captive bred.
I thought I saw it somewhere. And I only thought there were two kinds of Saddles, the brown variant and the black? but I could easily be mistaken there.

there are two different color variants, black like this http://www.edge-of-reef.com/pomacentridi/PMCAmphiprionpolymnusen.htm

and brown like this http://images.google.com/imgres?img...um=1&hl=en&rls=RNWE,RNWE:2004-51,RNWE:en&sa=N

a lot of people are telling me that ORA breeds them and there web site says they do but ive been searching for captive breed one for some time now and never can find them.

RBTA- ill let you know when they are ready. these are only going to be sold local. i dont even want to get into shipping.

Hmm the browns are the most commonly available Saddlebacks that you normally see in the stores. Since they're tank bred I would definitely say they should bring a premium.
The Saddlebacks are one of my favs as Gord and Ken can attest to lol. And of course if you can get mated pairs, that should demand an even higher premium. The 2 saddlebacks I've purchased were around the $23-$28 mark. Tank raised I'd say mmmm $35 is more than fair for both ways. A mated pair......$80 is not unreasonable IMO.
