What do you want to see on the CTARS website?

[[/I]Something Positive and creative smashed by negative thoughts .........trading and selling app for the site would be amazing I would check daily

Ha no point in getting rediculous like that there gents but there are some okay points. More then just a few people can run a web site. I don't know how many people are allowed access to change stuff around in it but a good site requires a team. I'd say at least 5-10 people just in updates alone. I can see Chriskid is pretty into it, as am I. Right now there are a couple of volunteers (hard to find in this line of work these days) willing to give up time to make the site take a u-turn and keep it going. Like I said in the other thread the club has enough activity daily to actually produce a pretty nice web site.

I think whatever we could do to model successful club sites such as Boston reef society or manhatten would be impressive even to those who have negative views.

I see people are looking for a barter & trade section. That is exactly why the CTARS forum section was created on the CTARS website - http://ctars.org/bb/index.php. It is a place where you can sell stuff that you may not be able to sell/trade on RC. It also has a place where you can announce things like a fundraiser you school is having. It also has a forum where "Members Only" specials are listed.

But, in looking at the website, I don't see how anyone could get to it if they don't know about it. It should have a link....

We turned our forums off for a reason...indifference and lack of use from club members. In fact I am surprised at the response that this thread is getting, because we had such a lack of interest in the website from past members of the club. I am fully on board with trying it again, glad to see there is some interest this time. I hope that if we put some effort into the site that it isn't wasted.

My last post was a general rant about all the crap that bothers me . Sorry to have wasted everyones time who took the time to read it . However I do feel a ctars site on its own would be a great addition . More of a members thing.i guess . Again my apologies .

You spoke your mind, whether people agree or not is irrevelent. Everyone is entitled to their own opinion. People do not have to agree. You probably said what many are thinking. No apologies needed IMO.

Greg - I had previously posed this in another thread about a month ago.

Marc Levinson had offered to connect the club with the webmaster @ DFWMAS when I had lunch with him at the conference. It would be a good opportunity to do some benchmarking and to get some feedback. I'm sure he'll have some suggestions and tools that we can use to make things simpler.

Greg has done a great job with the website over the years. However as his work load oscillates, his ability to keep up with the website changes. I also think he would rather spend time with his grandson :)

Some items that I encountered. While these are more on the transactional side of the clubs processes it will help to stream line things and make it easier for all.

1. A single log on system where users can re-set their own password to member only areas and a forum (if resurrected)

2. A better system for BOD to keep track of memberships. The existing system works, but requires the person in charge of the membership to do manual entry to update the status of a person's membership.

3. A way to print membership cards and envelopes directly from the data that has been input by pay pal. This will reduce time and avoid transcription errors.

4. Better integration with paypal. There have been issues where errors have occurred for both conference signups and memberships where the payment was not processed.

5. Standard e-mail address for all BOD members such as president@ctars.org to ensure that there are ways by which the members can reach the BOD. Also this prevents individuals posing as delegates of the club sending information out to members using e-mail address that look like they are coming from CTARS.

6. A system by which the BOD can e-mail all current and past members. The system should allow individuals to opt out of receiving e-mails with out the BOD having to manually edit an e-mail list.

7. The website should be CLEAN. I like the set up of the DFWMAS webste. It is simple to navigate, easy on the eyes, and intuitive. http://www.dfwmas.org/

8. If additional features are added, the costs of the additional storage space and bandwidth must be considered. I believe the club has a fairly basic account with a web host. Expanding the account to cover additional functionality will cost money and will need to be budgeted for.

9. Website needs to be setup in such a fashion that there can be multiple webmasters can update the pages if some one is on a business trip, too busy, ill etc.

10. Forums - this can be a double edged sword. It takes time an energy for moderators to police a forum. Right now the club relies on RC for this service. While we may not always agree with the moderators assessments of our actions, it is a service that doesn't cost the club money. While there are other reef keeping related websites out there RC is one of the top returns on google. Many members have found the club through RC. Abandoning this form or having a redirect to another site may have an impact.

11. Social Media - it needs to be determined if it is value added for the club to increase its use of social media to broad cast messages to its members.

I was on the the club site today and was thinking if the chat room option was changed to selling/trading/live sock just for members only not public would be a nice perk to members and if u couldn't sell then post on rc
I understand that whole site needs a facelift its 2012 so many options to add make I liked the mention of facebook and twitter options that spreads like a wildfire online and that would really put are name out there

another cool idea might be to host blogs for each member if they would like. the members can see what's going on with other people without fishing through threads.

we should also have a place for local stores to post their sales. which they can't on rc

I like the suggestions. I just hope if we put the effort into creating the new features (and reviving features we have tried before like member tanks, tank and photo contests) that more members will use the features than in the past. We will be incorporating new features starting after the holidays.
