You get head pressure with using fittings (elbows, unions, piping) as well. Anything that adds friction to the path of water adds head pressure. It's not just vertical height. There is a head loss calculator on RC, though it may not be the most accurate in some cases. If you can find a fluid mechanics book, you can figure your head pressure accurately.
