What Does Reeflink Do, Actually

Grizzled & Cynical
I have one that I have used to setup my Vectra pump and now my radion lights, but I am not really sure what ongoing role it plays. When I program the lights, for example, is the program 'kept' in the lights such that the reeflink could be shut down until the next time I wanted to change the program? Or does reeflink act as the home for the daily program and send signals to the lights continuously (or at least periodically)? I have assumed it is the latter, but when a buddy of mine asked I realized I wasn't completely certain.

Not much, other than **** people off! It communicates between smart phone/ iPad and devices for programming and feed mode.

Never really unplugged mine. But I mostly use the app when I want to change stuff. They unplugging it. See if your lights stay on then you will have your answer

OK, so nobody really knows. I shall ask ETM. Just got my lights dialed in, don't really want to fool with them.

So the Reef link is how Ecotech is able to have 1 stop shopping for the various products they provide via a WiFi signal. It gives you access to program/control your tank from any computer or your phone via EcoSmart Live Web interface or phone app.

It's similar to the WXM module for the Apex but doesn't require the WiFi router or Ethernet hard line the Apex needs and it retains full capabilities of your Radions, Vortechs etc, while the Apex module gives you limited access to the capabilities.

People can also email you a lighting schedule or flow pattern and you can upload it via the app or Web interface to your products all through he Reef link.

Basically, it's a WiFi router specifically for Ecotech products...

The light schedule is stored in your rations. If it's not, then how would people store their schedule if they don't have a reeflink(me) lol.

It's like Masedaddy said, just a way to program stuff without pulling out a USB cable and plugging it in

It's funny thst 90 precent of us who have tiding fully understand how it works. lol probably because I don't care as long as if works lol

It's just a "link" between your lights and Ecosmart Live servers and your computer/mobile device.
The lights don't have built in wifi.
When you program your device, that information is sent to the device and stored there.
Once your device has been programmed, you can unplug the reeflink, it's not needed.
And Ecosmart live stores the latest settings for each device, and saves those settings in real time as you make changes. So if you like your current settings, export them to a local file before you start playing around, so you can reload them later if you want to revert back.

If Ecosmart Live or EcoTech Marine dies then you are "screwed", since that ability to communicate with your devices will no longer work. May EcoTech Marine survive long term!

Yes, that's a good point. Let's hope the clocks in multiple units stay synchronized then. In my prior reefbreeders lights (much cheaper, I know:)) the clocks in my various units would stray very quickly.

It's true across the board. I work with large tech manufacturers and they all say that. We all rely increasingly on tech that we don't really understand how it works -nor would the vast majority know how to fix it. Kinda scary if you think about it (which I do).

Lol yes I have no idea how the plumbing In my house works as long as when I flush it goes down. Lol. Not scared at all about that lol

Not sure I'd view the plumbing in my house as 'tech' necessarily .... it's pretty much just pipes and a few valves . I do know how it works because I'm my own GC, but I get that most people probably don't.

All it is is a bridge from your lights/pumps to the internet. After your stuff is programmed on ESL it just sits there and looks for firmware updates and things like that. Why EcoTech used/uses RF and doesn't build wifi into the drivers is lost on me, I imagine we will see that in the next gen after they have sold all the Reeflinks they have already built

For 99 bucks I think it does
A lot. Might not be prefect but can control and program my pump 5 lights and 3 powerheads. Without wires not bad

A wifi capable driver would do the exact same thing without the additional 99 bucks or another box sitting around. Much cheaper products come with wifi built in, EcoTech needs to get with the program on this point.
