What fish have you had nip clams?

I have caught my Lawnmower Blenny nipping at my Crocea once or twice. If he keeps that up, he will not be making the move to the new tank.

:eek1: He looks kind off shaken up there Whiskey. Glad he made it out OK:D

I've had an Imperator Angel, Golden Pygme Angel and a supposedly reef safe male Lyretail Angel nip at clams. The little golden pygme angel was by far the worst of all of them.

Well, I never followed up on the bicolor in this thread...mine was nipping the clams. Within hours of me removing him, all the clams were back open and have remained open ever since.

Giving the bugger to a friend who doesnt have clams.

once, I had one new cleaner shrimp that would dig at my crocea, he lasted about a week, I couldn't catch him but surprisingly, he walked over a hungry acan that ate him, go figure

My yellow tang nips at my Derasa when the halides go off at night and the actinics are on. It's weird because he does not touch it unless the actinics are the only lights on. I think it has something to do with the way the the mantle floureces in the actinics and it attracts the tang. Clam has full extension with the MH on so I don't worry about it too much, except its really annoying and I find myself yelling at my tang like it's going to listen or something.

Could be that over the course of the day, some filamentous algae has grown near the mantle (this seems to happen in my tank) and the Tang is going after that. I frequently see my tangs cleaning stuff off of the shell of my Deresa - but no damage has ever been done to the mantle. If yours isn't damaged and the clam isn't retracting (not that it matters if it does once the lights go out) then I say don't worry about it. Of course this is my non-expert opinion...

Yeah, I'm not worried about it as the clam is just fine during the day with the MHs on and the clam is no worse for wear. The tang is definately attracted to the purple rim going around the mantle, but only when the actinics are on.

I wouldnt worry about it too much (it seems you dont). Its a deresa after all, and those dont have the oversized mantle like a crocea of maxima...theirs is pretty protected kept within the shell. But what would concern me is if the clam were to catch the tang in its shell...not likely, but if the tang gets ballzy...

My bicolor blenny just started nipping my crocea two days ago. I caught him doing it. I haven't been able to get him out yet so I have the crocea covered with a plastic pop bottle for now. As soon as I covered him he opened right up.

My experience has been that if you have larger, older fish they are going to nip at the clams no matter what we say about their species. I had some very large yellow and purple tangs and they destroyed 3 clams in days. I've since moved onto much smaller fish and I figure something horrible will happen to the tank or I'll quit the hobby or move before the fish get big enough to bother them. I think if you go with very small fish (from species that grow large like tangs) you are doing your clams a favor.

I had a Magnificent Foxface and a Power Blue Tang tear into my teardrop. That was only if I forgot to attach seaweed to a clip. Seems they needed something to nibble on.
