What gender?

Can anyone tell me if this a male or female by looking at it?

You really can't sex clowns by looking. If it has been by itself for a while, chances are it is a female. If it is in a pair, the female is always larger. If you are not sure you can spot the female because she is the most dominant of the pair or group of clowns.

Like James said, you can't tell by the picture what the gender of the clown is. In most cases it is correct to assume the larger one in a pair will be the female, but from what i've heard it's not always the case. Clowns are asexual, and if left by themselves for a long time will turn from sexless to male then to female and stay that way.

Is it by itself? and for how long? That would probably help to determine its gender.

female3 maroons are always almost black compared to their male too... yeah. females my guess

I've had it for almost 3 years. Not ever found another maroon clown so don't have a pair. I supose it's roughly 4" long. It's had other fish but not a clown. I was just curious if anyone new so oneday if I did find another I new what to get.
It's a royal pain in the butt and I've almost gotten rid of if a number of times. Must be a female!

With that amount of time left alone, it's definitely a female. If you wanted to try and pair it, the best bet would be to get a smaller juvi maroon clown.

Do you think that if I can't locate one in person, I could trust purchasing a male from online?

Be sure to read up on pairing maroon clowns specificly. They present some unique challenges that other clowns do not. I have not done it myself, but I'm sure there are some people here who can help.
