What happened to PE mysis quality?

Good morning everyone,

I am writing to find out what has happened to PE mysis shrimp quality lately. I know alot of people in the clownfish forum feed mysis shrimp to clowns since its such an awesome food for them.

When I used to thaw out a chunk of PE mysis the shrimp were whole and relatively intact. The last three packages I have purchased have the shrimp in tiny pieces and not intact at all.

Have they been purchased by someone that affected the product, have I got some bad batches, etc?

They have become so bad that I am planning to use someone elses mysis but I really used to like their product so I am hoping some knows something. Thanks for any info you can provide.

I'm not too sure as I feed these to my dish as well. They were out of stock for a very long time on these and I have noticed the newer mysis seem to be a lot smaller than the older product.

I have noticed this as well. I thought it was just my rush to thaw the chunks causing them to break up.

Good question Rare Angels. I thought the last batch I bought was just bad. It was almost like it had freezer burn. My fish seemed to notice the big drop in quality too. They used to love PE Mysis, but not lately. I threw about 20 oz. away and started using Hikari mysis. I really like PE mysis, but unless the quality returns to what it was, they lost me as a customer. I hope someone "in the know" sees your thread and fil us all in.

PE had a warehouse freezer go down several months back. It's really a great product IMO, so it's a shame that so much of it was damaged. We got one of the bad shipments (a couple of cases--they replaced on their dime with apologies that some of the damaged product was mistakenly being shipped out). We were told NOT to feed any of the damaged product to our fish "throw it away." We didn't use any of course since we test each batch of everything we use and discovered that the shrimp were not of typical PE quality.

The replacement order was fine, and this year's harvest should be fine too (our latest order was back to normal (clean water when defrosting)). Hope this helps!

I just got 2 packages last week from Premium Aquatics and everything looks great, shrimp are all nice and large and the water is clean.

FYI: The cubed PE mysis are small and have always been small but intact, the flat packs are also intact but contain MUCH larger mysis.

My LFS gets a freezer full of this a week. I feed a few packs of cubes a week and a few flat packs a week..this is the way its always been as far as I know.

They also sell large and small sizes. Most places only carry the large. I assume they use the smalls for the trays so they have less broken pieces.
