What happens if you get stung by a lionfish?

My husband just got stung by his lionfish. The spine stuck his finger?

What should we do?

Thanks for the info!

Treat it like a bee sting unless you see an allergic reaction. If you have a bad reaction, I would get help as soon as possible.

You can try to run his finger under the hottest water he can tolerate for 15 minutes or so. NOT HOT ENOUGH TO BURN SKIN and itââ"šÂ¬Ã¢"žÂ¢s always a good idea to get medical treatment to be sure he is alright, they can also give you something to stop the efects of the venom. Use you own judgement on medical treatment.

You will see swelling and maybe some tissue damage and it will hurt for a while, the thing I would be concerned about would be infection, this is why I would go to a doctor. The spines are sharp and depending on how hard you were hit, it could have went in deep. Who knows what could have been on the spine, besides the venom.
Here is something to read.

Good luck.

Python is right, they say HOTTT water for at least 15 minutes unless you start to feel sick then you need to run to the nearest hospital. Most local hospitals do carry loinfish anti-ventom. Other than that, i don't think it will be the end of the world.

First, pull the spine out if you can do it without the spine breaking. Then, the hottest water he can stand and he will definately need a tetanus shot. Please don't let him skip the tetanus shot, hubby is a paramedic and wanted me to impress upon you that some very serious complications could arise without one.

I would go without the shot. you have a better chance of winning the lottery than getting tetanus. i fact most dr offices do not even carry them anymore. you have to go to the Er to get one, and that can get $$$$

he will surely die..

just kidding :)

i have beens tung a few times by a 9" volitan.. hurt like hell for about 3 days. Just place it under hot water for a while. He should be fine in a couple days. However, it is possible he may have an alergic reaction, go to the doctors/emergency room asap if he starts to feel dizzy or vomiting 12+ hours after the sting. This reaction is rare, i just got a headache for a while, took some tylenol 500mg and slept it off.

bad advice randy.... i work in an ER and for ANYTHING that cuts the skin (knives, punctures, gunshots, to table fork accidently stabbing you, to ANYTHING) we ALWAYS ask the last tetnus....and usually give them one anway.

hey, sure might be extra $$$ but better extra $$$ now than more $$$$$$$$$$ for future bills :)

there was a story I read somewhere, maybe reefkeeping mag, where teh guy got stung by a lion (a bad sting) and it stopped his heart.

Hot water is the general treatment for marine stings. Do that for the short term, but I'd at least call the doctor tomorrow, someone who knows his medical history and potential complications (it'll send him scrambling for the manuals.) I'd go straight to the ER if there are any signs of sweats, red lines, high pulse, etc. They can give medications to stop a reaction, if it should occur. If he has a chancy medical history I'd get there just as a precaution...again, probably none of these things will happen. I've been stung by a brown recluse spider, and it did help to get a steroid shot right into the bite area...but nowadays they tend to hand you a Medrol dose pack and shove you right back out the door, at least for that situation: my point being that for bites and stings sometimes getting quick, aggressive treatment can make the healing much faster.

like most above said 15 mins of hot water then to a hospital if you havent had tetanus lately.

I been stung 3 times its not that bad
