What is growing on my frag?

I have a frag of a brain coral that has some weird growth on it. I see the same growth on a few other places on the rocks in the tank as well.

Temp of tank - 80* F
Alk - 8.5, PH 7.8, Mag 1300, CA 450
Salinity - 1.026

So what is it, and what should I do about it?

Thanks,

Erik

Definitely hydroids. They can spread pretty quickly and will sting nearby corals. Nothing eats them. Some people have removed the infested rock and poured boiling water over them to kill them.

Yup...toss the rock is the easiest way. If not try and scrub them off with a wire brush. Make sure you do it in a separate bucket or something. You don't want any residue to further contaminate your tank. Will spread like wildfire and kill everything! Rinse it really well in clean water before you put it back in your display. Good luck!

Thanks for the responses everyone. I will try an pop the frag off the rock, but it appears it is on the frag more than the rock.

I am tempted to try a toothbrush on them, and see if they come off. That might get it off of a coral for the time being, but it won't stop them in the tank.

If the tooth brush doesn't cut it. Mix a lime paste (calcium hydroxide aka Kalk) and coat them.

Ok,

This is what I have done so far. Yesterday was my water change day. I took a toothbrush and tried to clean off some of the rocks. On the frags, I took them out, and scrubbed them down with the toothbrush, and rinsed them off in the old tank water. I gave them a dip in revive just in case too. The hydroids, or whatever they are, had killed a bit of the bottle brush frag, but the brushing seemed to get most of it off, and the frag is OK.

Been researching, trying to figure out what eats these. A few people say peppermint shrimps will. I am going to pull my 6 line (he loves peppermints for dinner), and drop a few in an see if it has an effect.

I never had a peppermint touch them any hydroids. I thought I had luck with peroxide & a toothbrush, but after a few days they were still there.

Update:

Peppermint shrimp really help. After tons of internet searches, I found some advice that peppermint shrimp will eat them. I tried it, and they have cleaned up most of it. They probably would have got all of them, but it seems my indigo dottyback like to have shrimp cocktail, so they have been slowly disappering. I am going to get rid of the indigo dottyback, and get some more peppermints.
