why does it remind me of a sea apple. If it is a sea apple, its pretty dangerous. If it dies, it releases poison into the water

I don't think it looks like a sea apple, halimeda, or nudi. It looks as if it growing from those orangish colored balls (which look like sponges). You may try to find an id on the Reef Discussion forum.

My vote would be a harmless sponge.

Ok first questions, is this thing moving around your tank? Something other than swaying back and forth. I see the relative size to the zoanthids and it looks like a small thing.

It reminds me of some "fake" gracilaria that one of the florida online places sent me. Intially I was thinking dendronephthylia but the tips don't look anything like any dendro i've seen up close (granted hasn't been that many).

It is a type of gracialaria (commmon, known in the trade as "ogo") no big deal, not invasive in a tank, good for a fuge or feeding tangs

That is not gracilaria, sorry (I grow gracilaria by the boat load). It is a macro-algea though, not a coral, sponge, or anything else. Definitly not a sea apple.

I found in internet, called gracilaria verrucosa. Certain species of Gracilaria are used as food in Japan, Hawaii, and the Philippines. The macro algae is know to be both a good aquarium decorative and a good food for algae eating fishes.

Wait ... I do know what this is.

They use this in frogfish tanks so the frogfish won't lose their color. I bought some of this ages ago, and of course it melted under my metal halides at the time.
